A story I wrote last week about odd street names in subdivisions around the Triangle prompted some funny responses I thought I'd share.
A Wake County woman reported the following:
" We just moved from the Landover subdivision off of Forestville Rd. To get there, you had to go down Landover Lane, go past Landover Dale, Landover Glenn, to Landover Crest Drive. If you want to drive around the neighborhood, you'll go past Landover Woods. They even use the house numbers (4 digit) twice, in a 60-home neighborhood. We constantly received others' mail, and had ours lost. Would hate to call 911 in this place."
Another reader actually based a home-buying decision at least in part on the name of the streets in one neighborhood.
"I actually looked at living on Pooh Corner Drive, back when the homes there were under construction. Unfortunately, the builder had gone a little too far with the bear names: The models had names such as 'The Winnie' and 'The Stieff'. It was all wayyy too cute for me, so I bought elsewhere."
The same reader also pointed to the hilarity of Kangaroo Court.
The street name that I can't believe that anyone seriously considered is 'Kangaroo Ct.' It's in North Raleigh, off Litchford Road near the I-540 bridge. Probably the best example of a themed neighborhood is the one just north of Kangaroo Ct, where the street names all have a scouting theme. My understanding is that the land used to be owned by the Boy Scouts, and in return for selling it to him, the developer used names like 'Hiking Trai' and 'Tenderfoot Trail.'
Of course, one reader reminded me that the grand champion of all local street names may very well be Yubinaranda Circle in Cary. Go ahead. Sound it out.
Also - the good folks at Wake County pointed me to this website, with which you can now determine whether a proposed street name has already been claimed.

Mon, 07/28/2008 - 12:58 — Anthony (not verified)My favorite street in Raleigh has to be Pauls Penny Lane. I lived there for 2 years before moving to N. Raleigh. Pauls Penny Lane doesn't make a whole lot of sense until you check out the rest of the neighborhood: Long and Winding Road, Sgt. Pepper Court, Eleanor Rigby Court, Norwegian Woods Court.
I'm not huge on "theme" neighborhood naming with wood or stone used in every other neighborhood, but I loved living in this one and telling people what road I lived on.
