WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake to look for federal magnet school money

Bookmark and Share

Wake's three newest magnet schools could be in line for millions in federal dollars.

The school board will vote Tuesday to request a federal magnet grant that would cover Brentwood Elementary, Smith Elementary and Millbrook High. Wake will implement the magnets regardless of the grant, but David Ansbacher, senior director for magnet programs, said the programs would be “more robust” with the federal funding.

Brentwood and Smith will enroll their first magnet students in August. Millbrook will be in a planning year for 2009-10 before taking magnet students.

Ansbacher told the board that the federal guidelines only allow them to ask for money for new magnet schools or for a school whose theme is changing.

Wake has gotten $36 million in Magnet Schools Assistance Program grants since 1985. The grants are supposed to break down minority-group isolation at schools.

Schools must be over 50 percent minority at the start of the grant. But it's okay if they drop under 50 percent once the grant money comes in.

It's not a given Wake will win the grant.

Wake had asked in 2004 for a $7.5 million grant to start the now eliminated magnet program at North Garner Middle and to revise the themes at Conn and Joyner elementary schools and Southeast Raleigh and Enloe high schools.

That grant was rejected so Wake had to use its more limited local funds at those schools.

It's good that those school gets funding

It's good that those school gets funding, elementary schools near my area are forced to merge, we had 3 elementary schools rolled into one campus in temporily trailer structures, and now the school district is in financial trouble again and forcing to layoff teachers.

There should be some

There should be some analysis of the budget per actual magnet student, not the overall student population, as well. Some of the schools that are designated "magnet" actually take very few magnet students.
This isn't to say that those schools shouldn't have those programs as a lot of them are very popular, but perhaps they shouldn't be designated as magnet schools if they aren't actually a real magnet option.

Mr. Hui,

So, how much of a local funding is used at Magnet Schools aside from their regular spending per pupil?

We were repeatedly told that Magnets with their options do not take money away from non-magnet schools and specials are funded from federal money only.

Specials are not usually

Specials are not usually funded by federal money. They're part of the local Curriculum and Instruction budget.

Magnet schools are largely locally funded aside from the grants that may go to specific schools.  This grant only covers a three- to four-year period. Just because those schools could get $7 million doesn't mean Wake will fund them to that amount when the federal dollars run out. The grant money is considered to be an extra to the local bucks, not a regular part of each school's funding.

Thanks, Keung.

This disparity is wide

This disparity is wide spread even before the economic meltdown and is a good thing to quiz the candidates on since most voters are on the losing end of these changes.   I don't think the few who have it all understand that not everyone is so luck.

Keung? What was the reason

Keung? What was the reason provided for the rejection of the grant application in 2004? As for Purpose 5, how many years will they continue funding these magnet schools before they expect the local system to fund them? How much money was used from the local fund due to losing the grant? Thanks.

The feds never gave a public

The feds never gave a public reason. They just announced the districts that won grants. Keep in mind the pot is finite so most people who ask for money don't get it.

reason for rejection

I know that wake has a new grant person. I think the person who retired, Bill Carruthers, brought in tens of millions, and that might have been the year he didn't write the grant application. There is a new grant writer now. I don't know who it is. What kind of track record do they have?

The feds will always give you the reason you were rejected. WCPSS must have received them but they are not made public.
