WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake Schools Community Alliance raising money for school board candidates

Bookmark and Share

The Wake Schools Community Alliance apparently has a lot of money that can be spent in the final month before the school board election.

According to the WSCA's latest report, the group has raised $18,741 and still had $14,046 on hand as of Sept. 1.

Among the WSCA's latest contributors are Wake County Commissioner Tony Gurley, Apex Mayor Keith Weatherly, Holly Springs Town Councilman Vincent DeBenedetto and Morrisville Town Councilman Tom Murry.

District 7 school board candidate Deborah Prickett, who got $500 from the group, gave the WSCA $295.

At least two members of WSCA's steering committee, Joe Ciulla and Kristen Stocking, also gave money to the PAC.

The group did meet the Sept. 1 deadline to file. But according to the Wake County Board of Elections, the WSCA mistakenly filed the report initially with the state Board of Elections.

Campaign strategist Perry Woods, who is helping Rita Rakestraw in District 1, had filed a complaint on Sept. 8 with the Wake Board of Elections about the report not being in yet.

There was controversy over the lack of a previous report. The WSCA was one of the groups that received a certificate of delinquent reporting for not having filed a mid-year report by July 31.

Take Wake Schools Back has not filed a report with the state Board of Elections since July 31.

As noted earlier today, the Children's PAC is shutting down.

I'm thinking this $ figure

I'm thinking this $ figure just scared the pants off of you Perry.  You know this is mostly grass roots, $5 here, $10 there money and that's a lot of 5's and 10's.  I'm pretty sure, as you are as well, that the people who took the time to send in $10 will likely take the time to vote.

OK, you got'em, they're just a bunch of parents trying to do the best they can to change this disaster, not a experienced, well oiled political machine like the other side.

What you should be asking is, "Why is it that one group (nameless) that can run such well organized campaigns screws everything else up when they get in charge?"

Honestly, I expected the

Honestly, I expected the figure to be higher.  It doesn't scare me.  Most of the campaigns I work with are usually underfunded.  Ask Joe, I don't work for big developer candidates that usually have all the money in local elections.

Call me names all you like.  Frankly, I am greatful so many are concerned about our schools, and even though I agree with you all on many issues, I do not agree that we should abandon economic balance in our schools.  Here is why.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/breaking/story/937672.html

As I have stated repeatedly, I hope that no matter what happens on Oct. 6th, that all people in good faith can find ways to communicate and work together to make our schools even better.

What the...? Yet another CMS

What the...? Yet another CMS story! What is with the status quo's obsession with Charlotte? Apparently, in their mind, there are two ways to run a school system:

1. the way Charlotte used to do things -- adopted by the status quo, and

2. the way Charlote does things now.

There is a world of ideas out there and plenty of examples of school systems succeeding way beyond the mess we suffer today that was build by status quo thinkers mired in the past.

Wake County is ready for change and will demonstrate their committment to it on Oct. 6.

I'm guessing you thought

I'm guessing you thought the figure would be higher because you've been listening to L'user12345 for too long and just thought WSCA was a few rich, WW parents who could afford to send in $3-400 dollars each.  Now, realizing its a bunch of "regular folk",  I'm thinking dividing the # by 5 or 10 is a lot scarier than dividing it by 100 or 300.

It's all kind of petty to

It's all kind of petty to me. LOL  Filing complaints is typicaly the domain of losing campaigns, so keep it up as far as I am concerned.

Since you brought it up, this is an example of a grassroots organization -- WSCA -- being able to quickly recover from a minor delay and make things right. If WCPSS reacted similarly when they fail to do things well, WSCA would likely not even have to exist.

difference being a group of

difference being a group of PARENTS, not elected officials and/or bureaucrats, NOR paid politicians.....it's a learning curve not a "conspiracy"....*sigh*

Angela, I never used the

Angela,

I never used the word 'conspiracy', nor beleived it was in any way.  I was confident it was an oversight.  I was just doing my due dillegence.  The campaigns who did file their reports on time are generally, just 'parents' and average citizens too, but they got it done.  When I was at BoE on the 8th, WSCA's report was not available.  I'm glad it is now.  I did however find it ironic that it hadn't been considering how much grief is thrown at WCPSS, whom despite many faults, has done by all acounts a good job with less.

World of difference

There is a world of difference between the process of a group of citizen volunteers filing this paperwork and public voted officials paid tax dollars making expensive 'mistakes' and experimenting with our tax dollars. We expect our voted officials to do the job they are paid for and represent the public honestly and fairly. The current board of education does not.  They have their own agenda. And our children and our pocketbooks pay. This paperwork filing was just a fluff story intended to distract. Believe me, it hasn't.

congrats then on your "due

congrats then on your "due diligence" maybe you'll get a nice bonus in that paycheck...OH don't forget to "document" it though, just ask "bowtie".....

and it WAS done as you found out.....a State BoE over-sight, shocking, ain't it?

OH AMEN to that

OH AMEN to that Angela!

This is truly a "Grass roots" group that is trying to negotiate the many political complexities that exist.  All they are concerned with is doing what is right and anyone looking fora big "conspiracy" is a fool.....

Unless this group starts getting to drive "free cars", buys up costal land at a "discounted rate" or group leaders start acquiring cushy six figure incomes from one or our institutes of higher learning... then maybe, yeah, there's a reason to believe there's something going on.

Not clearly understanding the red tape... yeah... bark up the conspiracy tree elsewhere.
