WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake school diversity fight hurting area's reputation?

Bookmark and Share

According to a new Triangle Business Journal online poll, the area's reputation is taking a negative hit from all the controversy surrounding the Wake County school diversity fight.

TBJ reported today that 52 percent of the 1,937 voters in the unscientific survey agreed that the controversy is hurting the area's reputation. People could take the poll between July 21-27.

Another 14 percent agreed that the controversy has put the Triangle in a bad light but that the area’s reputation has been hurt “only a little bit.”

On the flip side, 16 percent believe that the diversity controversy has enhanced the image of Wake County. Another 15 percent said that Wake’s image has not changed at all. The remaining 3 percent indicated that they don’t care about public schools.

I am not convinced at all

I am not convinced at all that there is wide-spread controversy. On one side there is overwhelming bipartisan support across Wake County for the new board members and their new family-friendly, achievement-focused approach; that was very evident in last fall elections and continues to gain momentum today. On the other side I see extreme left-wing rabble rousers and race-baiters that are so few in numbers most of us can identify them by name. That does NOT equate to a monumental controversy. If you removed Barbar and his gang of trespassers and outside agitators and the N&O editorial board from the mix, it would be smooth sailing to better, higher-performing schools that meets the needs of Wake County families. This is not about controversy, it is about  a small minority faction attempting to create roadblocks to facilitate their own self-aggrandizing goals.

snooze

"On one side there is overwhelming bipartisan support across Wake County " .... remember no one shows up to counter these protests ... even when Ron put out request to Concerned Taxpayers, Civitas, Locke, Thale, friends no one showed up ... you need to start listen to more voices and get your head out of the sand ....

LOL What? There were plenty

LOL What? There were plenty of folks there to support the board members -- they were actually from Wake County too -- so I am not sure what you are talking about. They obeyed the rules and didn't get arrested so maybe you missed them on the news.

And how many social

And how many social engineering supporters showed up at the polls? It wasn't like the new members were ambiguous during campaigning about busing.

Negative publicity at the

Negative publicity at the national level is about as true as being recognized at the national level for excellence in education.

I'm sure that Meeker's

I'm sure that Meeker's wailing and whining about how them durn northerners have come down here and brought apocalypse upon the school system isn't helping either.  I'm not sure which was worse for the area's reputation, Meeker complaining about people coming to the area, or his negative statements about our schools.  If the poll results are at all indicative, the good mayor may get his wish and people will stop coming to Raleigh.

On the other hand, Cary welcomes Yankees with open arms (as long as your house is beige).

"open arms"?  I thought it

"open arms"?  I thought it was a cage? ;p

Don't you mean gates

Don't you mean gates? :-)

nope Cage Around Relocated

nope Cage Around Relocated Yankees

Oh

I hadn't heard that one yet - only the Containment Area one.

same difference actually? ;>)

same difference actually? ;>)

very unscientific survey

with a link posted on EVERY Facebook page run by Brannon, Wright, Cash Michaels, et al.....

I looked at a few of the

I looked at a few of the pages on Facebook, thanks for pointing that out.  It is funny how so many that are "scared" and "fearful" of the new board needs to drum up business on facebook.  They have every right to start those pages, but it is funny how you have...Great Schools for Wake, then you have We support the minority 4, and I also saw a listing of a page for Wake county students who are against "neighborhood school.

OOPS..forgot about the Del's army page, and also Alumni of WCPSS that supports the diversity policy (which it's funny how the info. page states that this group is only for people that GRADUATED in Wake County that supports the diversity policy).

You missed the "Keep Your

You missed the "Keep Your Hands Outta My Magnet Pie" page.

Are you serious? WOW!  Hate

Are you serious?

WOW!  Hate I missed that one.

Yeah, I agree. It's

Yeah, I agree. It's completely ridiculous and unscientific. I'm ashamed of these people, they should be looking up to leaders such as our wonderful board members instead of the political agitators such as Rev Barbaour.

uhm seriously, if you admire

uhm seriously, if you admire the guy, one might imagine you'd spell his name right.

LOL

I'm guessing you didn't get the joke. I've seen half of the conservative nut-jobs on this website spell his name in multiple ways, my favorite one so far is "Barboar".

Wait, I also have another question to ask... do any of you guys actually have jobs? I mean you seem to literally sit around all day and post comments on this blog.

Ehh, whatever, I doubt you'll answer my question (as usual). I've got an anarchy protest to attend... my parents and friends brainwashed me into thinking it's a good thing! Goddamn social engineering!

Nice language ...completely

Nice language ...completely inappropriate for this forum.

Funny, I've seen YOU and

Funny, I've seen YOU and your comrades post worse stuff on here before. I'm pretty sure my posts are tame, sorry if you can't handle a little criticism.

LOL I don't even know what

LOL I don't even know what you are talking about. I was not commenting on your "criticism"...whatever  it is. I was commenting on your choice of language. If it is acceptable language on this forum, then there must be no limits on the kind of language that can be used. I don't expect to see another censored post as the flood gates are now open.

Ohh, okay. So what exactly

Ohh, okay. So what exactly is inappropriate about my post specifically? Saying "goddamn"? My bad if that offends you Dallas.

You'd have to be a

You'd have to be a moron not to know that it is offensive to nearly everyone.

"Dallas? LOL

You offended

anyone with a soul, you piece of sh$t!

Actually, that offends most

Actually, that offends most people, I think.

Weird, because I've seen all

Weird, because I've seen all of YOU guys posting some pretty harsh language as well. I guess it's okay when someone from your side does it, but not from mine.

I don't know which side you

I don't know which side you are on, but woodstock and I are absolutely not on the same side.

Would you find an example of harsh language that you think is on par with the word that you used?

uhm seriously, if you are

uhm seriously, if you are gonna make snarky comments, one might imagine you'd actually read the post you're responding to...............

if you'd pay attention you'd

if you'd pay attention you'd realize that true_freedom was excercising "sarcasm" (i.e snarky)against the board majority.

whatev...

? huh how is that sarcasm?

? huh
