WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake school board candidate files pre-election campaign report

Debra Goldman's
school board campaign finance report is in but we're still waiting for several more.

According to an e-mail message from the state Board of Elections, the Wake Schools Community Alliance electronically transmitted a report late Monday afternoon. It hasn't been forwarded yet to the Wake County Board of Elections.

No updated reports are in yet from candidates Chris Malone or John Tedesco or the Take Wake Schools Back PAC. But as long as their updated reports were postmarked no later than Monday they're okay.

In the latest report for Goldman she has raised $8,290.80. It's less than half the amount raised by her District 9 opponent, Lois Nixon, who has pulled in $17,642.16.

But Goldman could come a lot closer with the direct and indirect help of the WSCA. The group gave Goldman a new donation of $2,450, bringing its total contribution to $2,950. This doesn't include the mailer it sent on her behalf.

Goldman is also getting PAC money from the Republican Club of Cary and Southwestern Wake County and state Rep. Paul Stam.

Goldman also got money from Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison and another check from Cary Town Councilman Don Frantz.
