WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake pushes back magnet/calendar-application notice date again

Bookmark and Share

Some people are unhappy that they'll have to wait again to find out if they've been accepted into a Wake County magnet school or calendar-application school for this fall.

The new notification deadline is April 16, nearly a month after the originally scheduled notification date and more than a week after the latest planned release date. Parents were supposed to have been notified online today but the date was pushed back because of the assignment changes made Tuesday.

According to the district's press release, staff needs the additional time "to  begin implementing the changes made by the (school) board and will then be able to run magnet/calendar selection."

The original notification was supposed to be March 18. But it was pushed back to today because of the calendar conversions made last month by the board.

There's considerable interest because there were 7,670 magnet applicants, 2,850 year-round applicants and 1,776 traditional-calendar applicants this year.

Well?

Does this push back the transfer application process?

I don't believe it would.

I don't believe it would. Staff had warned Tuesday that if the board made any additional calendar conversions at this late date it would push back the transfer application and appeal process.
