WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake not planning to convert any year-round schools in 2012-13

Bookmark and Share

Don't look for any Wake County year-round schools to be converted to a traditional calendar for the 2012-13 school year.

During a discussion today about Wake's building needs, Chief Facilities and Operations Officer Don Haydon said they're working under the assumption that all current year-round schools would stay on that calendar in 2012-13.

School board chairman Ron Margiotta asked Superintendent Tony Tata if that's also the assumption he's working on and he answered yes. There was some talk in the blue and green plans about converting some year-round schools.

I'll get into the discussion of Wake's building needs in a later post but for now staff says Wake is facing some looming seat shortfalls.

Of course not

If Don Haydon says we can't go back then hell fire, we can't go back.

Keung,

I didn't see the exchange on this.  Did the board just hear this statement and say nothing to correct his assumption, or did the board confirm that no schools will be converted in 2012-13?

Tata confirmed it after Hill

Tata confirmed it after Hill asked Haydon about it.

Thanks for confirming. This

Thanks for confirming.

This officially SUCKS.  There is no way we are ever going to fill all the YR schools we have voluntarily, unless we consider somebody's sixth choice under the blue plan to be voluntary.  So, after all that hard work on so many people's part, we are still stuck with this albatross.

I agree, it does suck. YR's

I agree, it does suck. YR's are a ridiculous concoction. They simply will not be filled voluntarily, and forcing students into them is unacceptable. This needs to be addressed NOW!!!

As long as any from the Burns-Dulaney gang

are left with a job the "we can't do it and that won't work" insanity will live on.

Haydon, Holdzcom and the rest should have been fired on day one of Mr. T's arrival.
