WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake GOP announces school board and municipal candidate endorsements

Bookmark and Share

The Wake County Republican Party has announced its endorsements for this fall's school board and municipal elections.

As expected, the press release sent today shows that the GOP-endorsed school board candidates are Heather Losurdo in District 3, Venita Peyton in District 4, Cynthia Matson in District 5, Donna Williams in District 6 and Ron Margiotta in District 8. This makes official the split in the opposition to Kevin Hill in District 3 with the Wake Schools Community Alliance having backed Jennifer Mansfield.

“The Wake County Republican Party is pleased to present these well qualified candidates on our endorsed slate," said Wake GOP Chairwoman Susan Bryant in the press release. "The process of recruiting and endorsing took over a year, with hard work from a strong recruitment committee. I am pleased with the final endorsements by the Wake County GOP Executive Board.

The Party is unified around this slate and we are looking forward to helping them achieve victory in the upcoming municipal elections this fall!"

Kudos to the WSCA

...for actually doing the due diligence and identifying a candidate in Jennifer Mansfield that:

  • Understands the issues
  • Works hard to make sure that she -- and others -- are informed
  • Brings passion, honesty, caring and experience to the role
  • Has a proven ability to advocate successfully on behalf of District 3 voters

Mansfield represents the ONLY option for District 3 voters who will:

  • Ensure stable school assignments,
  • Respect the successes of our magnet program,
  • Improve academics at ALL of our schools,
  • Advocate for the funding that a "world-class school system" requires,
  • Serve as a strong and effective representative for District 3,
  • Rise above the politics that have caused Wake County national embarassment at the hands of BOTH the Republicans (Colbert Report) and the Democrats (Koch Bros. Boogeyman)

The GOP has managed to find exactly what they are looking for in Losurdo -- an inexperienced political hack who lacks a basic understanding of the fundamental issues facing District 3 and WCPSS overall BUT is willing to put her name on the ballot and tap Republican funding sources in an attempt to buy the seat.

Losurdo will get some votes, but not from anyone that has met both Losurdo and Mansfield.  I've met and spoken with them both and would encourage everyone is District 3 to do the same.  The difference is clear and Mansfield is BY FAR the best candidate to represent District 3.

Kudos to Jennifer

Kudos to Jennifer for showing that the middle is still alive and kicking!

And in District 3 those who would like a middle balance can have a sane and knowledgable representative in this atmosphere of extreme politics. She really understands and cares about the issues. Unlike some, she doesn't see this responsibility as a political stepping stone. She wants to work for positive solutions for all families, not for political self-promotion.

...

Unlike some...

Who?

Why doesn't WSCA care if Kevin Hill wins his seat back?

Political bifocals

I guess it depends on whether you are thinking about political maneuvering like a big time politcal party would, or your eye on what you think is right for the community.

We think that having Jennifer in that seat would be the absolute right thing at this time.

?

In district 3, the only real question is "I can't stand Kevin Hill, but who do I vote for?"  As long the number of people asking that question is over 50% of the vote, he cannot win.

With more than two

With more than two candidates running, it is very possible no one gets 50%. Then, when it goes to a run off, anything can happen.

Eh...

I disagree with the "anything can happen" view.  Nobody is going to switch their votes TO Kevin Hill in the runoff.

Being endorsed by the Wake GOP

is like a pile of stupid telling me to swim through a lollipop to vote for a dump truck.

Bravo, that was spoken with

Bravo, that was spoken with the clarity -- and sanity -- we've come to expect from the Democrats.
