WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake Democratic Party announces "coordinated campaign" for school board elections

Bookmark and Share

The Wake County Democratic Party plans to run a "coordinated campaign"  this year to help elect school board and municipal candidates.

In a press release last week, Wake Democratic Party Chairman Mack Paul announced they had "hired a professional staff to run a public awareness and aggressive Get Out the Vote campaign for the 2011 election cycle." Much of the press release is an attack on the Republican majority on the Wake County school board and GOP businessman Art Pope, accusing them of engaging in "social engineering" and trying to return the state to the 1950s.

"This year we are prepared to fight back," Paul writes. "This year we plan to move forward and restore respect and stability to our county."

Paul claims that, prior to 2009, off-year elections were "sleepy" little elections featuring civic-minded individuals running for local office. But he says "almost without us noticing the other side turned municipal and school board elections into intensely partisan affairs."

"Inexperienced, but ambitious, candidates with ideological agendas emerged who wanted to turn our towns and our county into their own personal right wing experiment," Paul writes.

Rather than leading Wake County forward with sensible good governance as people like Mayor Charles Meeker have done over the years, this group of politicians wanted to lead us into a future that resembles the North Carolina of the 1950's more than the North Carolina of the 21st Century. They want to 'prove' the theories of Art Pope and John Hood and then turn the clock back for the entire state of North Carolina."

After saying they were "unfortunately caught us off guard in 2009," Paul says that "we all have had to witness the irresponsible actions of the school board majority and the negative mark they have left on our hard earned reputation as a first class community."

Paul justifies the party's efforts by blaming it on Pope.

"We didn't turn school board and municipal elections into partisan affairs but we can't afford to stand by and watch Art Pope, and all of those like him, write checks and campaign plans for the other side during an election year so that they can write the future of Wake County while they are in office," Paul writes.

(The fact that Paul accuses the board of engaging in "recent social engineering" is interesting considering how critics of the old board majority leveled the same allegations.)

Why does this Surprise anybody

President Obama, Gov Perdue, Mack Paul, Rev Barber, Keith Sutton, Kevin Hill, and Nancy Mcfarland are All reading from the same playbook......

Lets hope that the VOTERS Again pull down their pants and spank them in public.....

The Wake Dems

  • Lost in 2009 with their message of how forced bussing was good for our children.
  • Lost the 2010 County Commissioners by calling it a Voter Refrendum on the school board election in 2009.
  • Why do we think that message has changed?

"Spanked"?

Interesting "Jeff_Morse" that some of us that care about our kids and local public schools can expect to get our "pants pulled down and be spanked in public"! Your interesting description about your desired October school board election outcome is exactly why I, and possibly others, will turnout to vote in October. Our kids are being lost in this whole debacle where political cheap shots are instead the name of the game...oh, along with a preoccupation with "spanking" apparently!

Spanked is the correct Word....

2009 School board Results!

BOE seat #1

Chris Malone Won by 22.79 %  land slide  (58.4% to 35.61%) 3 way race

BOE seat #2

John Tedesco WON by 52.89% Major landslide   (75.97% to 23.08%) Runoff

orginal October race had five candidates and Mr. Tedesco got 49.36% of the vote!

BOE seat #7

Deborah Prickett WON by 28.8% Huge landslide (64.28% to 35.48%)

BOE seat #9

Debra Goldman WON by 18.07% Major win (58.94% to 40.87%)

These results in 2009 occured in a Higher than average Voter Turnout for a school board election.  this is called getting SPANKED.....  The vast majority of the Voters feel the same. this should be an interesting OCTOBER election.....

We'll pull 'em down and then back over your heads

The chance this sleepy bunch will even come close to prevailing this time around, since they slept the last go round, is laughable. Sure, 1 or 2 might slip by and win, but overall this county has shown for several years now that we are through with the stupidity of the past. Diversity is no longer the driving force and neither is getting the free ride from Washington by playing the shell game with our children.

Mack's Goal is 2012

Voters are remarkably much smarter than Mr. Paul gives them credit for. The nonsense of not allowing all parents an equal say in their child's education ended in 2009. If he's trying to use these elections to help his pitiful lineup for 2012, then 'whoops' - failed again. Venita Peyton

Mack Paul can do all the

Mack Paul can do all the tough talking he wants, but the truth of the matter is his side has the wrong message. The voters of Wake Couny made it very clear what they wanted on 2009 and will do the same in 2011. The citizens of Wake County convicingly rejected the failed, burdensome and discriminatory status quo policies of the Democrat Party and the dispicable race-rustling of Barber, Gatewood, Petty, Brannon, etc.

Mack is wasting a whole lot of resources in what will end in a monumental embarrassment for him and his party. It should be fun to watch.

"Wasting resources"?

Woodstock,

I'm not sure the Democrats are as you state "wasting resources". They have been outperformed by a more organized bunch of GOP supporters and candidates in recent elections. Those GOP folks have rallied (or preyed on?) families unhappy with student assignment policies and perhaps rightly so. Seems the Democrats have now realized that their preference to stay out of local school board politics, or campaigns, can no longer be ignored given the GOP has rallied and hijacked the process along with the WCPSS school board. Of course, we know full well that you would prefer that the process be completely one sided so that Independents and/or Democrats cannot slow the Gang of 5's dismantling of our wonderful public school district. Likewise, I suspect there may be some GOP supporters that got more than they anticipated when Tedesco and company took charge...

Paula, "Independent, Fair & Speaking Up for MY Kids."

Your cluelessness is showing

Your cluelessness is showing again... it was rational Democrats and unaffiliated voters ( there is no such thing as "independents") along with Republicans who helped elect the Fab 5 in landslide victories in '09; and they will demonstrate similar support this Oct.
