All Wake County schools are required to observe a moment of silence today in honor of the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that took place a decade ago.
The school board unanimously adopted a resolution on Tuesday for schools to observe a moment of silence every year to remember 9/11. Since the anniversary will fall on Sunday, the date set by the school board for this year was today.
"It's a momentous event in our history and what it means to us," said school board member Chris Malone. "I think it's important that our children understand what it means and where it's going to take us."

Better then nothing
Fri, 09/09/2011 - 10:17 — mommy59On the way to school today I asked my son do you think the school will do a moment of silence for 9/11 or say something in the announcments about the day.Momemet of silence is better then nothing.
In Ohio after 9/11 it was adopted into the Dublin school curriculm to have at least one period set aside to learn about and remember Veterans Day.
Hopefully when the schools did observe their silence they mentioned the militarywho have lost their lives due to 9/11.Only can change so much at a time-remember this was the school system that had school on Memorial Day for year round schools!
How about a moment...
Fri, 09/09/2011 - 09:52 — bpuli9999to honor the soldiers who died in Iran and Afghanistan -after 9/11? Just Memorial day for them then.
That was ten years ago and CM still does not understand where 9/11 has taken us?
Memorial Day is what it is
Fri, 09/09/2011 - 21:13 — Voice_of_Reason_That day to all military people is a sacred day to honor our fallen brethren past and present. All Americans should honor our fallen soldiers that day. I am sure if you poll military people they wouldn't want a special day in addition to that.
Remember, ever one of the military that died after 9/11 VOLUNTEERED for service, this has been true since Viet Nam ended. In fact, most that have died recently volunteered after 9/11. That is something to keep in mind next Memorial Day. Some brave Americans believe in service above self.
BTW- Where were you when WCPSS and the former school board put Memorial Day as a school day in 2009? I for one thought it was a slap in the face. The Wake County GOP did also: http://blogs.newsobserver.com/wakeed/wake-gop-skip-school-on-memorial-day.
Veteran's day is where you should thank the living that served or are serving. Funny how many people don't realize this.
?
Fri, 09/09/2011 - 12:35 — Bob_SconceThere's no such thing as "just" Memorial Day. Who are we to say that the sacrifices of the men and women of the armed forces who died serving this country in Iraq and Afghanistan are any more, or less, deserving of recognition than those who died in Vietnam or in Korea, in Europe or the Pacific?
