Wake County school system now taking student transfer requests for 2012-13 school year

The Wake County school system is now taking transfer requests from families who want to attend a different school than the one they've been assigned to attend this fall.

Parents are finding out today where their children will go to this school this fall, either by looking online, receiving a letter in the mail or in their children's backpacks. Families who find out today have until June 1 to submit a request in writing to change their assignment.

Copies of the transfer form can be found in English or Spanish by clicking here on the district's transfer information page.

The form can be mailed to the Office of Student Assignment, 5625 Dillard Drive, Cary, NC 27518 or it can be submitted in person. The form can also be emailed as an attachment to studentassignment@wcpss.net.

Families will need to give specific reasons for seeking the transfer. Families can list up three schools they'd like to attend.

Student assignment staff will review each request and consider several factors, including whether there is an available seat at the school and whether the student’s original school assignment will create a hardship for the family. When reviewing requests, staff members consider:

* Child care or student health concerns
* Whether the parent is a school employee who wants his or her child to attend the same school or calendar
* Parents who want their children on the same school calendar
* Families moving to a new home

Transfer requests that are rejected by staff can be appealed to the school board.
