WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake County school board to discuss budget, leadership academies and vocational high school on Tuesday

Bookmark and Share

The official public hearing on Wake County Superintendent Tony Tata's budget proposal will take place tomorrow after all.

An earlier district media advisory had said the hearing would be at the March 27 school board meeting. But a revised district media advisory and the official board agenda lists the public hearing for Tuesday.

During the work session, the board will receive a "school innovation update," which is the catch phrase for a presentation on housing the leadership academies at Peace University and the Gov. Morehead School for the Blind and the CTE high school at the former Coca-Cola bottling factory.

The discussion could result in the leases being added to the regular meeting agenda.

At the last meeting, Jim

At the last meeting, Jim Martin asked how many families were still pre-assigned to schools without transportation. Overman reported 800 and said that all of the families had been contacted. We are one of those families and have not been contacted - wonder how many others are out there? My school board rep has emailed Peppler and Overman but no response yet.

Keep pushing this issue.  I

Keep pushing this issue.  I realize that this is the first year of the plan and I'm trying to cut them some slack but not having an assignment is just ridiculous.  I think it's important for people to be aware that this is happening.  Not to scare them or try to get the plan stopped but to make people aware.  Eventually enough light will be shined on it that this issue will get the attention it deserves.  WCPSS really needs to make sure that this doesn't happen to anybody else in future years.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this.

Will they be discussing

Will they be discussing assignment and when/if they will update the proximity waitlist numbers? Supposedly, they have worked on the magnet waitlists and were going to update the proximity waitlist numbers yesterday. The numbers for the 3 high schools in our area have not changed at all.

It's not on the agenda, but

It's not on the agenda, but like the last meeting they could add it on.
