WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake County school board member Debra Goldman says 25 more buses to be put in service Tuesday

Bookmark and Share

Wake County school board member Debra Goldman says that staff plans to put 25 additional buses on the road Tuesday, following the Labor Day holiday, to address complaints about bus service.

School officials aren't, at the moment, confirming the figure cited by Goldman, but they acknowledge that a plan is being worked on by the transportation staff. Goldman said Superintendent Tony Tata is meeting today with the transportation staff and going over every bus route as part of the new plan.

Goldman says that the board agreed earlier this year to take 27 buses off the road and staff wound up removing an additional 25 vehicles. She said that staff was bringing back those 25 extra buses.

It wasn't immediately clear if the figure cited by Goldman includes the four buses that Tata said Tuesday was being put back in service.

Restore the original bell schedules!

Hundreds of parents and teachers from our school protested the changes. We'd love to have our 8:30 start time back. You've pretty much successfully scared most folks off the bus, so changing us back probably wouldn't hurt....

Is Debra..

Goldman the school transportation spokeswoman now? Guess she is really that desperate for some news coverage. The other blog post says exactly the same thing but Tata says it.

Unbelivable

How many schools had their times changed because of the 2 tier bus system going into ffect.Don't fix something that isn't broken! Now they have to repair the damage.

Mrs. Goldman

“I know our superintendent is working constantly,” she said. “He has gotten himself in the trenches.”

Mrs. Goldman this is what happens with you hire someone without  experience

Think about that when you

Think about that when you vote for president in November. At least Tata is taking responsibility and is making every effort to fix the issue. I bet it's resolved in a week or so. Mr. Tata has infinitely more experienced than our current president and he's just running a school system. He's also showing greater leadership and integrity.

...

No, this is what you get when you having someone actually leading by example.

Leading by example...

causes a transportation mess? I guess we are in for a rough year then.

...

Yeah, nice try. Some of you just don't like him. I get that. But that's not because of his leadership abilities.

Tata has been nothing but open and forthright about this issue and has taken ownership of the problems. He's been responsive and has worked to correct it. That, to me, is an example of a good leader.

Ownership

He has to take ownership - there's no one else to blame.  He had the data, and made the decision based upon funding.  He minimized the ramifications of going to this transporation pattern on students and parents.  He made public months ago students would endure longer rides.  Changing the transporation patterns was short sighted.  Leadership would have been not getting the transporation department in this mess to begin with. This is called clean up to keep your job, which he has stepped up to the plate admirably doing. I hope no one gets fired at Central Office - they knew this was a disaster waiting to happen, and now they've been given the green light to fix it.

Are you saying the transportation department created a routing system that they knew wouldn't actually work? Sounds suspicious.

The efficiency rating had to be addressed. What's your suggestion? I guarantee if he ignored it, you'd be complaining about the loss of funds.

What?

His PR person Cris Mulder said on Monday that the bus problems were "normal" for the 1st day of school, they tried to lie there way out of this, Mr. Tata has not been open and forthright.

Uh... Transportation

Uh... Transportation reported on Thursday that call volume to the transportation department was running "slightly higher" than last year. And anyone that's lived in Wake County for more than a few years knows that we've had years (particular high growth years 2004-2007) where transportation was a nightmare the first week of school. We survived those years and we will survive this year.

More than 1.5 million?

So do they loose the five million now on top of that as well?

Will teachers have to be fired?  If so, how about having parents buy tickets for their kids to ride the buses to cover that expense and keep teachers in the classroom?
