WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake County school board member Chris Malone leading in bid for state House run

Bookmark and Share

It looks like Wake County school board member Chris Malone will be the Republican nominee for the state House 35 seat.

With 15 of the 18 precincts reporting, Malone has 56 percent of the vote while Duane Cutlip has 44 percent. Malone is headed toward a November battle against former school board member Lori Millberg, who is the Democratic nominee for the seat.

It looks like Cutlip's attacks on Malone for voting for the school budget didn't work.

It's too soon to report anything on the statewide races for Debra Goldman and John Tedesco.

UPDATE

With all 18 precincts reporting, Malone has 56.82 percent of the vote.

It's not too soon

Tedesco and Goldman win.

Congrats to all 3.

Guess not everyone is a hater huh.

So excited for him :)

So excited for him :)

I hope Mr. Malone wins in

I hope Mr. Malone wins in Nov. He appears neither knowledgeable nor interested in matters concerning education and both WCPSS and he are best served by parting ways.

That makes a lot of sense...

That makes a lot of sense...  He isn't doing a good job here, so let's kick him up a notch and give him a one year extension so we'll have to put up with him until 2014 before we can vote him out again because he's not doing a good job.

We could have been rid of him in a year!

I guess this race further demonstrates that money is king in politics, not ideas.  Malone outspent Cutlip 7-to-1 or better.  Another winner of the night, George Holding, used the same old politics as usual (and a couple million bucks) to persuade people he wasn't politics as usual.

Until "we the people" start cutting through the crap and doing our own research instead of letting lying politicians feed us what they want us to believe in slick ads, we'll see these same slick politicians win every time.

Cutlip had principles. Malone is an opportunist.  Just because he won doesn't make him right.  A pox on your house if you think that rewarding Malone with a House seat just to get him off the School Board is a good idea.  That's just short-sighted.

My thoughts exactly

I was just going to say the sooner Chris Malone leaves the school board, the better off students in WCPSS will be.
