WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake County school board approves Middle Creek bell schedule change

Bookmark and Share

The vote to move the start time for Middle Creek Elementary School to 8:30 a.m. for this fall was approved unanimously and with some melodrama.

During public comment, Middle Creek parents supporting the change thanked Superintendent Tony Tata for bringing it forward. Board member Susan Evans said the credit should go to board member Jim Martin for "pleading their case."

Martin thanked Evans but said that Tata and other people had worked hard on  it too.

Board member Debra Goldman said she was surprised that Martin had made the motion considering he had voted against the districtwide bell schedules before, including the changes that some parents had sought to prior drafts.

Board member Deborah Prickett echoed the same theme, noting that Martin and board chairman Kevin Hill had voted against the bell schedule. Prickett accused Martin of having voted against families who wanted the new bell schedule.

Martin responded to Prickett by saying he had voted no before because the Middle Creek change wasn't among those included in the version voted on by the board.

Martin said he had also voted no before because he was thinking from a system perspective where he disagreed with so many elementary schools starting so late.

Best line of the night.... from Keith Sutton about the Middle Creek bell schedule change:

"Does anybody else need any credit for that vote?"

As for Hill, the discussion on this issue truly highlighted what a completely inept and incompetent leader he is.

Political Posturing

This email is in response to the string below - about the Evans/Prickett/Goldman/Martin carping and Woodstock's comment about politics.

Some of these conversations are so much waste of time. DGoldman and DPrickett are clearly just out to be obstructionists and to slow down proceedings.  Any chance that Martin changed his mind after hearing from all of the parents?  Well, there is nothing wrong with that!  And IF Middle Creek change was not in the earlier plan that he voted on, then all of this DP nonsense should have been nipped in the bud.  I think the majority is way too polite and needs to just shut down the innane commenting.  The earlier objections by DGoldman for going into closed session on the lawsuit were something out of a 5-year old.  Everyone - watch the tape and see if you don't want to just get Kevin Hill to say MOVE ON.  Spoiled DG can't always get her way.  The Democrats are too polite.  Ron M. would have ridden right over that sort of behavior - I think Kevin H. should lose a bit of his southern gent demeanor and take on a bit of the Ron M. thuggishness. In these cases, we would all benefit and the meetings would MOVE ON.

Keung,

Evans went after Prickett again during Prickett's comments on this. Any idea what she said?

Prickett said Evans was

Prickett said Evans was interrupting her by calling for the vote on the motion.

The board comments came during the discussion of the item. Evans refernced back to the comments that parents made during public comment.

......

I thought Martin contended that the bell schedule changes were politically driven. And now he's saying he voted against it because one of his schools wasn't on the list?

Keung, did he ever discuss Middle Creek during the other discussions about this?

Honestly, I don't remember.

Honestly, I don't remember.

Fortunately others do.

Fortunately others do. Martin was performing political gymnastics.
