WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake County school board approved revised 2013-14 bell schedules

Bookmark and Share

More to come later, but the Wake County school board approved tonight the 2013-14 bell schedules.

The board approved a few changes from this document presented two weeks ago. The revised plan now means 17 schools are shifting for this fall, with six shifting by 30 or more minutes.

The new changes include starting Walnut Creek Elementary at 9:15 a.m., ending a program in which it operated 45 minutes longer than other elementary schools. The plan also starts the Wake Young Men's Leadership Academy and Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy.

The board also dropped a change to Baucom Elementary School.

Why is the general...

assembly letting the school board get away with this? Maybe the county commissioners should get involved?

OT

Keung, are you going to blog about Martin's comments regarding Pieces of Gold getting "whiter and whiter" and Caucasian jazz musicians?

Starting at the 19 min mark.

Wow, Martin's comments are

Wow, Martin's comments are so incredibly offensive and racist.

No Kidding....

WOW....really offensive! One of my favorite Jazz musicians is David Sanborn. I guess we need to let him know he is too 'white' to be a jazz legend according to Dr. Martin's view!

Incedible! Some people see

Incedible! Some people see everything in black and white. He actually sat there at the performance and counted the white kids and the black kids. Where are the jackasses that support this guy?

This brings up another

This brings up another issue. Apparently Martin's entire perspective of diversity is that you can see it and that it's all about being black or white. That this narrow minded individual is an educator at a major university is very concerning.

Later

Later. Check back at 9 a.m.

scary

Maybe Mr. Martin should specify what color your kid has to be in order to participate in jazz band, dance, strings. Is there a similar quota for sports teams? Student government? Math club? Will principals now need to report on the ethnic makeup of all extracurricular activities? What if a kid has a caucasian parent and a minority parent - do they 'count' towards the 'non-whiteness' quota? Is there something wrong about a caucasian kid who was obviously good enough to perform in a jazz band in pieces of gold? Why does he belittle that performance?
I hope the voters in Mr. Martin's district are embarrassed for him.

I doubt a single voter that elected Mr. Martin

even knows who they voted for, much less are embarrassed by anything this loon would say.

I look forward to the coverage on this story. Apparently there's more to Mr. Martin than anyone knew!

After watching the footage, listening to his words and watching his body language, every single parent in Wake County should be concerned about their child's future for as long as Martin sits on this board. I mean WOW!!

I can't wait to see if any of the local media takes him to task on those comments. But I won't hold my breath!
