WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Younger siblings coming into

Younger siblings coming into the system can go to older siblings non-base school. I'm not saying it is perfect but it could be a million times worse. They could be saying we are moving everyone around. And in response to having a rising kindergarten, I went through the choice plan last year with my son (as a rising kindergartner) and had to go through two rounds to find a school I felt was acceptable. I know run around in WCPSS. It isn't right nor fair but this plan could be a lot worse. We all knew things were going to change this year with a different board majority.

Would You

Send your rising K to an ES that is 10 miles away? How about a MS that is 17 miles away?

Nope...

And that's why when they reassigned my neighborhood to a base elementary school across town several years ago not one of us sent our children. There were 18 elementary schools closer than the one they assigned us to. Our area was split into magnet, private and homeschool in one fell swoop.  They cannot play those kind of games with our childrens lives - no matter what part of town.

YEP..

You would think history has taught them something. It's time to split WCPSS into smaller district folks.

AMEN!!  Too big...too out

AMEN!!  Too big...too out of control...BREAK IT UP!

My son is going 8 miles away

My son is going 8 miles away right now. This was just preliminary also. They will probably end up changing alot of it. This will lead to segregated schools in some areas which the majority are very against. Make sure you email the school board. Not sure how much they listen but I have always gotten a response from at least one of them.

Thanks..

I've already heard from my BOE representative.

Janis what did they say?

Janis what did they say?

She

Forwarded my email to Judy Peppler and Laura Evans. She said she is just now getting a chance to look at the details and digest it.

I can't imagine that this

I can't imagine that this assignment will hold. It's just too insane, as is loriac's.

It sounds great in theory

It sounds great in theory but I wonder how long they will honor these feeder patterns and grandfathering. It will not affect me as our high school assignment stayed the same so I know my middle schooler can go to the same high school as our current 9th grader (unless they change the assignment). But my node's elem and middle school were changed and I do worry that eventually they will not honor the current feeder assignments. It all depends on who is in control of the board and who the super is.

For now I do think they will honor the current feeders and will also allow siblings to attend the same schools as they age up. But I worry about the future.

This is my second year

This is my second year dealing with WCPSS as a parent (I have lived here all my life though). I am starting to figure out that you aren't guaranteed anything year to year with these people.

no

this is a whole new level of worse than policy 6200.

Historically we know 2 things - 1) people do not show up for the move and schools rapidly become under-enrolled and under-resourced, and 2) they vote. The republicans will clean up in a few weeks and Martin and Evans, despite their insistance that this will have no effect on the bond, have tanked the bond.

They have never experienced this before because they are magnet parents, they have no clue what they just did.

We need

The assignment maps to be publicly presented and remind everybody just why the pre-'09 board was voted out to begin with.

The scary thing is that the Evans/Martin show want to further take a blender to this.

I sure hope not.....

I sure hope not.....

they did

we had 24,000 students reassigned in 2009 and that drove the election. We clearly have tens of thousands being reassigned through this change in policy, I am seeing neighborhoods displaced that have been stable for years.

They sank their bond and they will push this county into a true neighborhood schools model if they don't back off now.

you seem

Angry. We disagree, and we're passionate about this subject, but is there any reason for name calling? Will that help us work through this as parents or members of the same community? Maybe, even on a message board, we could be civil? And maybe even act like adults?

...

Don't misinterpret FS's posts. He may not be the most eloquent but he is usually spot on. And is again with this post.

Changing the assignment plan by adding diversity will alienate many parents once again. Tata & his staff have done a great job of bringing the community together (minus the few fringe crazies) and addressing the educational concerns and needs of schools and students. FS has been in this struggle for years and knows exactly what he is talking about. You may not like his style but he is right.

Thanks for uplifting my morning

I think I'll go enjoy this fine day now.  You do the same.

The name calling is the least of anyone's concern and yes, there is a good reason for it. Years and years and years of parents being ignored and screwed by the same kind of pathetic liars that are once again in charge of the school board.

This is why there was a revolt in 2009 and this is why you had a new plan this year. Parents said enough and voted to change things.  That lasted all of what, two years?

I will say it again and again and I hope it burns to those it is intended for, you who supported and elected these morons are now getting exactly what you deserve.

Maybe next time you'll listen!  But I seriously doubt it!!

Well, I'm sad and angry and it's getting REALLY hard

Well, I'm sad and angry and it's getting REALLY hard to keep civility in mind for me personally and I'm generally a fairly calm and reasonable person. So, don't be surprised if you witness a whole new level of lack of civility in this community in the coming days, weeks and months. Also, I suspect you will be seeing red shirts, green shirts, purple shirts, etc.

So, as an update from earlier - not only are my kids' friends from different parts of the county assigned to different base schools as I knew would happen, no surprise there, so are we - surprise! This means that my children's more proximate friends also have a different proposed ES and MS than we do. Hey, at least they'll get to see each other again in HS. Well - no never mind, by then the BOE will have found some more changes to make, then the few people left at that point still supporting this crazy train will finally give up on it too.

Can't wait to see the actual assignment maps. Based on the few examples already shared tonight, I'll bet they are mindboggling. No wonder they didn't want to share them in the public sandbox. Concepts sound great, but the devil is always in the details and it's when people can see the details of implementation that they figure out what sounded good in theory isn't so good.

What I can't figure out is what in the world made people think the fact they were increasing the number of assignable pieces to 9,000 nodes (or whatever they are calling them) would possibly mean a greater likelihood of a neighborhood or people in the same area being assigned to the same schools? The more available pieces, the more they can send pieces in different directions.

The more available pieces,

The more available pieces, the more they can send pieces in different directions.

My thoughts as well. They haven't gotten rid of the node system, they've just multiplied it. This will make it easier for them to parse out particular neighborhoods or apt complexes for diversity/achievement assignment.

Hope changes will be made

My schools are the same as my previous base school which is good news.

Checked my old address and it's now assigned to Green which will become traditional and Durant MS which is YR.  Looks like more work needs to be done here because both Carroll and West Millbrook are much closer to Falls and Millbrook than Durant.  Who would want to go from a traditional elementary school to a YR middle school that is much further away from home than the old base traditional MS???

It may be a glitch in the

It may be a glitch in the system. They carried over all the feeders from this school year, that includes Green feeding to Durant. Green is now supposed to feed into Carroll since they'll have joint magnet themes. It could also be that they'll have Green feed into Durant for one more year because of the calendar continuity and then go to Carroll in 2014-15.

Keung, question re all feeders...

My feeder patterns have changed. Instead of York Daniels Broughton, it is York Leesville Leesville. I thought your meaning above was that staff kept the feeders as is, so can you please clarify? Also, how does a parent look at a school's new proposed base nodes? Many thanks.

Let me help clear it up

"In theory, staff said the feeders should be the same. It's also possible that it was adjusted due to crowding or achievement issues."

Can you see in his answer alone the uncertainty of what is about to happen? As for honoring this and that, plan accordingly, lots will change, much will not be honored and the "capping" issue will easily be the biggest downfall of the entire cluster. Yes, caps should've been put in place years ago, but we never had board members, or their leaders, with the balls to do what needed to be done.  Their choice was to shuffle, reassign and hide the truth.

As for what's coming, it will be worse than any of those previous years.  You elected people that can't tell the truth and they are now in control of your destiny.

Think I'm off the mark?  Just wait and see!

"You elected people that

"You elected people that can't tell the truth and they are now in control of your destiny."

the truth is, those that were recently elected are controlled by a small maniacal group of fringe dwellers, AND are now the majority.

*almost* makes that old Gill/Head/Millberg cabal look like amateurs.

In theory, staff said the

In theory, staff said the feeders should be the same. It's also possible that it was adjusted due to crowding or achievement issues. Probably more crowding considering the issues Daniels had this school year..

At this point you need to ask the school system to send you a base map. They've been making people request hard copies as opposed to sending them electronically as PDFs. Requests like those are handled by the Office of Family and Community Engagement. You can call 919-431-7800.

Thanks!

I will call them tomorrow!

Do you know when they

Do you know when they usually have current year enrollment numbers by school available so we can get an idea if which schools are currently at or above capacity and likely to be capped?

Monday is the 20th day for

Monday is the 20th day for traditional-calendar schools so that's the day, along with the 20th days earlier in the year for the year-round tracks, that will be used to determine the official enrollment. Wake usually takes a little while to verify the 20th day numbers before releasing them. By November, the facilities staff will have the annual school facilities utilization report out that has the crowding figures for each school.

Any word on what theme Green

Any word on what theme Green Elementary will be getting?

They haven't announced the

They haven't announced the themes yet for any of the three new magnet schools.

It's up and has us

It's up and has us now...mandatory year round for our elementary and middle school.  Not happy!

Surprised

Ours are yr too. They are further away than the trad that used to be our base and they're not the yr we currently attend which are closer.

It's up!

It went up just after 8pm.

interesting

My base schools are my most proximate schools. That is not going to make the dems happy.

My proximate schools

Our proximate schools are 2 miles for ES, 4 miles for MS and 4 miles for HS...They have assigned us to a base that is 10 miles away for ES, 14 miles for MS and 15 miles for HS. Nothing even remotely proximate in that.

Hey Sam12345...they gave us Wakefield MS and HS.....do you want it? HA

are you in woodvalley?

they are completely being moved out of Leesville, into pleasant union, wakefield ms and wakefield hs. They won't cooperate with this.

Yep.....

The google group message board for the neighborhood is already lighting up.  No one really understands what they mean by feeder patterns made in the 2012/13 school year will be honored.  Does that mean if your kid's ES had a feeder pattern defined, your child gets to keep that feeder pattern all the way through HS as long as you provide transportation?  What a mess....I looked on mapquest and Wakefield is actually 19 miles from my address.  There is nothing proximate at all in that.

It means that all the feeder

It means that all the feeder middle school and high school patterns used for the choice plan are the same ones in effect for the new plan. Click here for the list used in the choice plan. The plan said that for the students who went to, let's say, Jeffreys Grove Elementary in 2011-12 would feed into Leesville Middle rhis school year. So they're carrying it over so that the bases assigned to Jeffreys Grove this school year would still feed into Leesville for 2013-14. Staff says the feeder patterns will be honored for the 2013-14 school year but the board could say no to that. Not everyone entering sixth- or ninth-grades under these feeder will get transportation.

So????

Does that mean if a parent doesn't like their base and they are lucky enough to get into another base ES through the 'choice' process,  would they automatically inherit the feeder pattern from that school regardless of where they live or what base is tied to their address?  Basically would they would have a new 'base' for MS and HS due to the ES they are attending.    I understand that transportation would not be guranteed.

Thanks Keung!

If you don't go to your base

If you don't go to your base school then you get the feeder for the school you're attending. There are a few tweaks to this though. Only Group 1 magnet students are still being preassigned to a magnet feeder. But those students can file a return to base form and get in there if there's space. Group 2 and Group 3 magnet students are now going to their base but have priority 2, after siblings, in the magnet application process. The base students in Group 1, 2 and 3 magnets, assuming their feeder isn't a magnet, have priority four in the magnet application processs.

Hopefully our assignment is

Hopefully our assignment is an error then, because we had Sycamore Creek as our ES but now my address lookup says Pleasant Union - Wakefield Middle - Wakefield High. I think WH is our 4th closest HS at 19 miles away. Unbelievable.

unbelievable

What parent would let their HS kid drive 19 miles in the morning to school.  That is absolute insanity.  I can't even imagine how long a bus ride would take.  I hope they are ready to manage the crowds that will show up in color coordinated shirts at their next meeting.

I think its 19 minutes rather than miles

I mapquested too because I know I live further from Wakefield than Wood Valley and it's 15 miles from my house.  Still, it doesn't seem like a logical assignment for you.  I would think Sanderson would be closer.  There is going to be a big problem in the Leesville area because there isn't another high school that anyone would consider proximate.

I am not in your

I am not in your neighborhood but that sounds insane. It sounds like MOST addresses are assigned to proximate schools. I can't imagine why they would assign a neighborhood near Leesville all the way to Wakefield. It's bad enough to wonder if it's a mistake.

Thanks WakeCtyMom....

We are all hoping and praying it's a mistake or it's time to get out our green signs for the next board meeting!  The problem with this area and district 7 in general is there is only 1 middle school and Hilburn Academy which only houses 100 kids at each MS grade level.    They need to look at a 6th grade and 9th grade center until they can get M8 built.  Of course after this, I seriously doubt the bond will pass.

They have to fix Wood Valley

The assignments are ridiculous. I've seen a few other surprises, but no absolute shocks like I see with that assignment. I can't imagine that it will stay in place. (Especially knowing how unified and vocal your neighborhood can be! I live near 440, but I have a lot of friends in your neck of the woods.)
