WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake CARES announces endorsements for Wake County Board of Commissioners

Bookmark and Share

Wake CARES has announced that it's endorsing the four Republican candidates for Wake County Board of Commissioners.

The group notes that in 2006 it had endorsed Republicans Joe Bryan, Paul Coble and Tony Gurley and Democrat Lindy Brown. But Wake CARES says only the three Republicans kept their promises on providing on mandatory year-round schools.

"Unfortunately, Brown quickly broke with her campaign promise to support families who could not make the mandatory year round calendar work," Wake CARES says in explaining why they're endorsing Republican Phil Matthews.

Brown had run in 2006 against Republican Commissioner Phil Jeffreys, who wanted to convert even more than 22 the schools agreed to by the school board.

Wake CARES says Bryan, Coble and Gurley "kept their campaign promises to provide families with a choice in the mandatory year calendar conversions."

Who Cares

Who Cares which candidates Wake Cares endorses - Although their endorsement will help voters in their decision to vote for the other candidates - This is the best endorsement the Democrats have for the Board of Commissioners !!!!!!

Its Official

Pretty clear now Wake CARES has turned its self into partisan hack group.  What's next the ASPCA adding their two cents to the political circus of the Wake county commissioners and the BoE?   Is this really news at this point I ask?  At this point IMO I rather start hearing about the non-profits haven't endorse anybody and are focused on their mission supporting the students and parents to increase achievement.

I don't see how anyone can

I don't see how anyone can come to the conclusion that WakeCARES is partisan; they do not support parties or ideology, they support ideas. In this case Lindy Brown said she supported one thing, but her actions were contrary to her stated position. Tomorrow we get to see what the voters think about it.

Cool !

Cool !, I got the little one pager in this Sunday's N&O - Your Republican Candidates for Wake County Commissioner. Headline "They're the ones who won't raise taxes !"  Pretty straight forward, no fine print, no disclaimers, easy to measure, either a yes or a no.  I can't wait to hear their ideas on how they will provide for 30 new schools, cut $100m out of the school budget and at the same time provide for a better education - all the while fighting to lower taxes.

Phil Matthews

is an easy choice over flip flop Brown. When you burn those who support you, eventually you lose out.

Phil seems to be a good person, has a solid background and told me that parents concerns will play a part in his decision making process when elected. He understands that support from voters for bonds, funding etc... will be paramount in moving forward and wants to help create that supportive environment.

I think Wake CARES has it right. If the other 3 hold their seats, electing Phil Matthews would be a plus for Wake County.
