WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake announces Principal of the Year finalists

Bookmark and Share

Wake has announced its finalists for principal and assistant principal of the year.

The Principal of the Year finalists are Mary Page of Bugg Elementary, Annice Williams of Barwell Elementary, Teresa Winstead of Durant Road Elementary, John Wall of North Garner Middle and Edward McFarland of Fuquay-Varina High.

The Assistant Principal of the Year finalists are Melissa Blackmon of Willow Springs Elementary, Lisa Brown of Leesville Road Elementary, Edna Fay Jones of Forest Pines Elementary, Christopher Coby of Wendell Middle and Robert Matheson of Apex High.

The finalists are nominated by the school system's principal and assistant principals.

The principal of the year finalists are interesting. Three of the five are at year-round schools.

At Barwell Elementary, the school has recently been in the midst of controversy over how Wake notified parents they could take advantage of No Child Left Behind transfer options. The school did make AYP this year and would be able to stop offering transfers to families if it passes for a second year in a row.

Still, Barwell has the lowest passing rate on state exams of any elementary school in Wake.

The 2009-10 Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year celebration is scheduled for October 15 at 6:00 p.m. at Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh.

It is a joke. So is Teacher

It is a joke. So is Teacher of the Year. It's usually the one is the school that is willing to fill out all of the paperwork. Let' stop this stuff and get down to business.

Sort of like nominating

Sort of like nominating yourself for a national diversity policy award. Interesting.

Wow. The Stone Throwing Here

Principals, Teachers, and Staff are working long and hard hours to educate and care for the children of this community. (My children are among them.) Now, with the budget cuts, they are doing more with fewer people, less money, and smaller paychecks. If you have time to complain, perhaps you have time to volunteer. I'm sure if you do, not only will you get to know the outstanding, hardworking people in WCPSS, but the children will benefit as well.

Guess it comes down to who you know.

Is this the definition of the Old Boys (or girls) club? How can a principal of a non-passing school get nominated? Bonus points for passing kids through the system? Vicki Perry and Kathy Godfrey at Harris Creek Elementary are two of the finest not just in the county but in the state. Not only is their school producing quality students but they believe in inclusion, a rarity in Wake County.

Awards

I agree, I don't have the proof it appears you have! My concern is how we can even be giving awards to anyone in this state. From all accounts the whole system has problems. The awards should be few and far between, as far as I am concerned!!!!!

Principal of the Year Finalist

What is so interesting about the Principal of the year finalist? I was waiting for the explanation in your article, none was forthcoming with the exception that three are from year round schools?

Look at Barwell Road.

Look at Barwell Road.

they nominate themselves?

"The finalists are nominated by the school system's principal and assistant principals"

Yep.

Yep.
