WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Waiting to hear about possible delays on Thursday

Bookmark and Share

Wake County parents may find out before their children go to bed this evening whether school will be delayed, or even cancelled, on Thursday.

School officials say they'd like to make a call about classes on Thursday before this evening's 11 p.m. TV newscasts. One way to also find out is to click here to register for the school district's e-mail notification service.

School officials aren't making a prediction about tomorrow, but snow watch veterans know it's likely that at least a one-hour or two-delay will be announced. The thought of high school students driving themselves to class as snow is falling and just as the sun is rising isn't a pleasant thought.

If Wake decides to cancel school, traditional-calendar students would be scheduled to make up the day next Wednesday, Dec. 22 It's now scheduled as a teacher workday and is supposed to be the start of winter break for students.

Year-round students would make it up on a Saturday.

UPDATE

Wake says it will make a decision about Thursday by 10 p.m. tonight.
