WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

The early voting, absentee ballot and write-in votes have all five Democratic school board candidates in the lead.

Most of the districts have about 1,000 votes in with the Dems up by 60 percent or more. As previously stated, the Democrats outnumbered the Republicans 2 to 1 in early voting.

It represents 1.6 percent of the turnout in the five districts.

woo hoo!! Where's Woodstock and Sideburns now?

Looks like the voters have spoken!!!, Woodstock & Sideburns & all the other trolls on this blog!

I guess Woody...

did not vote in enough districts today?

Sure I did. Have no fear,

Sure I did. Have no fear, when Losurdo wins in the run off, it will be back to business.

Way to go voters!

The inept voters of Wake County prove that once again they have no business voting. Thanks to the inept actions of those who support those who "woke up in 'da moanin' ..." parents will NEVER EVER GET STABILITY in this county. With the liars they just allowed to take over the board we can look for another stop to the assignment plan, Debra "the silent one" Goldman joining the ranks of the newly elected, General Tata being shipped back overseas, more and more and more and more bussing for your children, Diversity topping the agenda for all, frequent visits from Rev'rearend Barbour and his sidekick KD Lang, Jim "the lying and arrogant" Martin giving us his superior dance, The Enloe and Green Hope welcome wagons, The return or Patti " I quit" Head and Lori "we know what's best" Millberg, NAACP bumper stickers at all IHOPs and in about 2 years we'll hear nothing but bitching from the morons that bought into the lying Susan Evans and her YouTube campaign of stupidity because after all, she is a CPA.

Good job folks. Way to prove that my taking the odds in Vegas were the right thing to do. Now if I can just find some clueless newcomer to give me 20 cents on the dollar for my house so that I can move to a state where the school system isn't a game for most. Yep, that shouldn't be hard at all in Wake County.

Yes I agree FS Way To Go Voters!

Harry_Moncelle

It appears that the people of Wake County want the School Board to focus on Educational issues not some ideological narrow minded thinking that has polarized our elected leaders for the past two years. It is my hope that the new BOE will be more transparent, open, listen to all sides without beating  the drum of a partisan agenda.  Thanks to all the candidates and thanks to the many folks who share ideas on this blog.  I don't always agree but I have not doubt everyone who takes time to share ideas will lead to some creative and healing solutions for our Schools.

Harry, it appear that you

Harry, it appear that you also drank the kool-aid. The current board has done more to focus on educational issues than the past several boards combined. The availability of 8th grade algebra to ALL kids will do more for the citizens of Wake County than any previous policy initiative by any BOE.

Our board was polarized precisely because of those who objected to the change in 2009. Those of us who supported the current BOE majority could just as easily polarize this new board by acting inappropriately, booing candidates, disrupting meetings, etc, though I for one would recommed a more mature approach.

In 2009...

they were not inept?

If you really want to move, I would suggest Kansas. Great state with great school systems.

Wow FS

Better make those sour grapes into some wine and celebrate rather than the whine you are serving up tonight!

Pour me a glass

Then tell me where my kids are going to school for the rest of their school years.

When you can do that we'll share a glass.  Until then, screw off!

Very testy tonight FS

I assume your kids will go to school in what ever State you move to after you sell your house for 20 cents on the dollar... at least that is what you said that I was responding to...

Yes Dems have won

Congratulations on your victory!  But please remember that ALL parents want to be heard or there will be consequences for the future of wake county school systems.

You could not be more wrong

Most parents could care less about being heard. That's why you voters in Wake County like flip flopping this BS every 2 years or so.

Do what you want new board. After all, you lies got you in, Rev'rearend barbour got you in and now, well, you're in. Have at it. Your turn to lie to us some more and send us back to the Patti Head/ Lori Millberg way of life.

That's the key

We don't want WCPSS to be a pendulum swinging. We moved too far right before. Now we need a better balance for all students.  I think the new school board members are very aware that all families and taxpayers need to be heard. I just hope they will address the real problems of the system and not fabricate others for political purposes (as the current majority did).  I am incredibly thankful to the voters in WCPSS for this result (and hope Hill wins the runoff). Public education still has a chance!!!

So Will The Republicans Jam Through

their reassignment plan even after being repudiated by the voters?  If so, will the new majority in December cancel it and start working on a more sane compromise?

Carolyn Morrison Said....

she would vote for the plan.  Let's see if she decides to back peddle.  If they try to throw this plan out and they go back to busing for diversity...I smell a huge lawsuit coming!  If this board goes to the democrats, they will have to tread very lightly or they will be no better than this current board.  They can't call foul and then turn around and do the same thing!  Time will tell my friend!

Why do they have...

to be better than the current board?  All of a sudden lawsuits are okay? I thought they were a distraction.

The democrats have to tread lightly but the republicans don't have to?

It will be stopped immediately

and you'll have zero idea where your kids will attend school for 2012-13 until after that school year starts.

Enjoy. You deserve nothing less.

Amen

Nothing will happen if we just change who plays the bully.

Nothing will happen period

But you knew that already didn't you. It's all a game to most of you.

I don't think any of the new

I don't think any of the new members intend to play the bully. I think they want to get politics out of our school board. Thank GOODNESS!

mrunion, satch, dove...

I hope and suspect you are correct. Malone, Prickett, Ronnie M, Tedesco, and to a lessor extent Debra Goldman, seemed more concerned with their political party's manifestos than what was actually best for our kids, teachers and county. The voters have sent a message that a politically partisan approach that is not balanced and focused on our kids has no place on our school board. Evans, Martin, etc should learn from Ronnie M and Tedesco's mistakes if they want to hang around a while. On the same token, Tedesco, Prickett and Malone - time for some self-reflection and hopefully an appreciation that cautious and well planned change is better than abrupt change.

Paula, "Independent, Fair & Speaking Up for MY Kids."

Let Hope So

Because if this board goes back to busing kids all over the place and changing schools in the name of social eco (not growth), then there will many many unhappy parents out there.  Let's hope they can work together and really give parents a choice, because after all, parents know what is best for their children.

Bull Squat

That's exactly what we're going back to and as for the unhappy parents, tough. They sleep through most of their children's education anyway. Who cares about them.

The Plan Is A Good Plan....

if parents are given stability, choice and proximity I will be happy!  I hope IF and that's a big IF the democrats take control they don't go back to the madness of the previous board!

Yes. We should stick...

to the madness of the current board.

All for that

I'm all for BOE members spending their time on substance over showmanship.   There is no role for arrogance and deliberate antagonism of voters and each other by either side.

Could you pass that on to

Could you pass that on to Martin and Evans? It will be interesting to see how they respond to critics that complain like they did.

Why would you pass anything on to them

It's not about what you want. jim will tell you how he wants it and Evans will lie to you. Or is it the other way around?

Either way, you don't matter. Nor do your kids.

The voters have spoken in 8

The voters have spoken in 8 districts, 4 lean one way 4 lean another.

Starsonours, don't kid yourself...

Today the majority of voters in ALL 5 districts supported change. And on a side note the likelihood of Tedesco being re-elected when his term is up is VERY questionable - seems he's widely despised. However, I'm sure Luddy, Pope and Tea Party types will throw plenty of money to his campaign.

One would think Hill will have a good shot in a run off against Losurdo given her radical background and husband's antics!!!!

The lesson learned tonight: Do want is right for our children and public schools rather than what your campaign donors and political hacks and party mandates require.

Paula, "Independent, Fair & Speaking Up for MY Kids."

YES!

Right on, Paulastam! I'm so sick of this school board being taken over by partisan idealogues! Thank God the voters have thumbed their nose at Art Pope and all his political power-buying money! Let's return the board to a being a non-partisan body.

not back to the way it was

But I don't think this new board will revert (or even come close) to the problematic ways of the earlier board (before the new majority). the personalities aren't there and everyone has seen that we need a board that listens to the public and focuses on what is best for all students and families. It will be interesting to see how they handle losing RM. Will JT become board chair in December?

We have all learned and demand better

We all better understand our past assignment plan and policy neglected to evolve and grow with the changing needs of Wake County and families. We know WCPSS, Mr. Tata, and our newly elected board members must do better.

Citizens will demand from our BOE and all of us an ongoing commitment to nurture; guide, and constantly re- examine our schools, all choices, and the needs of every student.

I am hopeful everyone who has been so invlolved these past  years will continue to do their part in challenging decisions and holding every board member accountable. We are all on the same side of this in that we want what is best for wcpss and all children.

No plan and no school system is perfect, though challenging means pointing out problems & also finding solutions.

The math placement remedy is a wonderful example of many people on the ED task force constantly challenging and asked questions. So many appreciate this and have learned to listen more and be open to improvements without limitations.

Many are ready for more concensus and diplomatic relations on our BOE, while still continuing to ask the hard questions.

Paula don't kid yourself,

Paula don't kid yourself, before the election 4 seats were controlled by the dem's after the election 4 seats are controlled by the dem's with one up for grabs. The most they can hope for is a 1 seat pickup.

We are still a divided county.

Blinded by reality?!

Starsonours, GOP candidates were soundly defeated in all 5 districts tonight. I suspect that Malone, Prickett and Tedesco are now very relieved that their seats were not up for re-election tonight too as there may indeed have been a fully united county!! However, in my opinion this is not a Dem v GOP issue. This is simply a case of Ronnie M and Tedesco making highly questionable decisions that did not support our teachers and the county as a whole. Voters cleary were not happy with their governanace on the school board - just ask Ronnie M, Matson, Williams and Peyton!!

Paula, "Independent, Fair & Speaking Up for MY Kids."

Don't break your arm patting

Don't break your arm patting yourself on the back. The pick up is (possibly) 1 seat. The idealogy of 4 seats remained the same with 1 in play not exactly a sweep especially when you look at the districts involved.

In 09 the idealogy of all 4 seats changed, we are still a divided county.

They Spoke Pretty Resoundingly in The 9th Too

If Losurdo had any class at all she'd acknowledge the 10 point whipping the voters laid on her and graciously concede.  But we all know how likely that is.

Given that Hill fell only 47 votes short of winning outright I think we can safely conclude that Mansfield kept Losurdo alive - anyone wanna lay odds on whether Woody says "thank you"?   Yeah, me neither.

Hill's seat won't matter

goldman will join force with those she's voted with since being elected and Wa La, new majority regardless of what flaccid Hill does or doesn't do.

YOU'RE A WINNER. WHAT DO WE HAVE FOR HIM JOHNNY!

Hallelujah!

The political equivalent of an inside straight!

Don't pack for Vegas you may

Don't pack for Vegas you may be surprised...Districts 4, 5 and 6 were not really in play. 3 and 8 were the only ones that were in doubt, 8 was an upset but in 3 Hill wasn't able win decisively against a weak opponent.

Starsonours...

we know you defended Losurdo resolutely when her potty mouth habits, racially inappropriate sense of humor, etc was brought to the public's attention and now you claim that Hill beating her by 10% today is not decisive! Bless your heart - you are a tad too resolute!

Paula, "Independent, Fair & Speaking Up for MY Kids."

Paula I defended trying to

Paula I defended trying to use her husbands facebook page against her. You spoke of how flawed she was but yet Hill was not able to win a majority of votes. That says a lot about Hill and his support.

Inside straights do happen

regardless of the cards we are delt.  *Smile*

We've gotta help Kevin

You speak the truthBtold! We

You speak the truthBtold! We gotta help Kevin. More work to do but Wake County seems to have gotten back on track. This is a great night!

Zande - were you ever

Zande - were you ever affected by previous reassignments based on SES diversity? If so, I pray that you are never reassigned to a distant school, like the ones my kids were assigned to. Or are you one of the privileged that sends their kids to magnet schools?

Rhetorical question

Jeffrey I think you already know the answer to your question.

Long Time For Those Last Few Precincts
