A retired Wake County principal became today the second person to apply for the district’s open school board seat.
Tom Benton of Zebulon said his 32 years in education would help the often divided Wake County school board. He’s seeking the District 1 seat vacated by Chris Malone that represents Wake Forest, Rolesville and most of eastern Wake.
“I’ve got some useful experience, and I consider myself a consensus builder ... this is a really good opportunity to step in and try to have an impact,” said Benton, 62. “I’m too young to stay at home and do nothing.”
Benton was the last principal of Zebulon High School, which became a middle school in 1989. He later served as principal of Durant Road Middle School in North Raleigh until he retired in 2005.
He was named Principal of the Year in both Wake and Pender counties and was later named 2004-05 North Carolina Middle School Association’s Region 3 Administrator of the Year.
Benton, a registered Democrat, had publicly endorsed board member Kevin Hill in his re-election bid in 2011. In this letter to the editor, Benton praised Hill's experience as an educator and said it would serve him well on the board.
Hill’s victory in a runoff election against Republican challenger Heather Losurdo allowed Democrats to regain the board majority.
Benton also wrote this letter to the editor in December defending holding early release day so that teachers can have professional development. He was responding to this letter to the editor questioning why teachers needed to have the early release days, in which schools are dismissed 2.5 hours early six days a year.
Benton declined to talk about his views on hot-button issues such as the student assignment plan. Instead he stressed the need for bipartisanship and addressing the schools that need the most help.
“There are a lot of issues facing the board right now. I see a real need to represent the (eastern Wake) district,” he said. “I’d like to make sure we’re honest about the amount of resources students need in order to receive a quality education.”
Education advocates in eastern Wake say they’re frustrated the region doesn’t receive more attention from the school board considering its low SAT scores and high poverty rates.
Malone, who formerly represented part of Knightdale, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Wendell, and Zebulon, is from Wake Forest. Malone in November won his bid for a seat in the N.C. House and resigned from his position on the school board in December.
Wendy Ford of Wake Forest is the only other person who has applied so far for the board vacancy. Ford, also 62, served 19 years on the school board of the Churchville-Chili Central School District in upstate New York.
The school board is officially nonpartisan, but it is led by a Democratic majority, and election records show that Ford is a registered Republican.
Malone, a Republican, has said he’d hope the board would appoint someone who has similar views to him to represent District 1. But Malone has no vote in the matter.
School board chairman Keith Sutton has said he wants the board to fill the vacancy by the end of January so the new person could be sworn into office in February.
Malone’s replacement would finish out his term, which runs through November. The new board member could also run in 2013 for a full four-year term.
The deadline to apply for the open seat is Friday.

The packet includes a joint letter from the mayors of all five towns in the district — Knightdale, Rolesville, Wake Forest , Wendell and Zebulon — urging the school board to appoint Benton.
Benton also has a letter from former District 1 school board member Linda Johnson urging the board to appoint him to the position.

shocking (actually nauseating)
Fri, 01/04/2013 - 13:01 — snordoneKevin found someone who supports his views to place in Malone's seat rather than letting a REAL representative of D1 step up and fill the seat. This is not about the BOE in the end, it is about getting a status quo supporter to vote for a status quo superintendent. It is about setting up central office to be as useless and ineffective as it has been for the last decade. It is about finding someone to support the hiring of a superintendent who will spend his tenure obfuscating the facts - that we are failing thousand of children every day, that we are denying children access to education because of their race and income and that our magnet schools are unethical and immoral in their focus on the 'elite' learners.
D1 can vote this guy out in the fall but Kevin's goal will be accomplished by then.
I am a democrat, but I would much rather work with people who care about education irrespective of their political party than work with people who don't care if kids learn. This makes me SICK.
Sick of democracy?
Sat, 01/05/2013 - 14:07 — EBDarcyAnyone living in District I could have stepped up and thrown their hat in the ring. If Kevin recruited him...so what? You could have been out there recruiting someone who agrees with you. I'm sure that among the last minute applications there will be someone the Repub recruited. Surely Art Pope must have some friend in District 1 that he could find to run.
District 1 is in need of a rep because Malone used the office as a stepping stone. Successfully, unlike Tedesco and Goldman. Be sick that he couldn't even finish out his term.
Lori Millberg is more hated than Casey Anthony

really?
Sat, 01/05/2013 - 21:35 — snordoneThis is democracy?
Like Caroline Sullivan's election - right? When the democrats put up Caroline for CC 6 weeks before the election using a professional commercial and pretty purple signs? And a website that did not even have an issues tab? And not a single statement or opinion about the major issues facing Wake? And the sheep with Ds next to their name voted for her because she has a D next to her name?
Yes, this is indeed democracy at its best, our forefathers would be so proud of what we have become.

Fri, 01/04/2013 - 11:36 — Bob_SconceThe other candidate also has experience in education.
My concern with this guy is that he won't bring any new blood to the table in a district that is in desperate need of reform. He is Kim Jong-un to Kevin Hill's Kim Jong-il.
Can't be....

There are currently 5-6 BOE
Fri, 01/04/2013 - 13:17 — shearertwThere are currently 5-6 BOE members that are far worse than Malone....so, apparently, it can get a lot worse!
We have a winner....
Thu, 01/03/2013 - 17:09 — RonnieRHe'll probably get it over Ford, but lose to her in November, as the first district is a GOP leaning district since the latest redistricting maps were drawn.
