WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Timing of new enrollment projections

Bookmark and Share

Do you think there's any significance in the timing of the release of the new student enrollment projections?

As noted in today's article, the projections weren't released in the normal way. Traditionally, they've been released at a joint meeting of the school board and county commissioners.

Instead, they were released at the school board's facilities committee meeting.

Nicole Kreiser, the county budget and management analyst who helped Asst. Supt. Chuck Dulaney in drafting the projections, cautioned school board members that the figures were only preliminary. She said they hadn't been finalized and shared with county commissioners yet.

But after the committee meeting, Dulaney said he considers the projections to be final. He said they're going to be used by staff to help develop the new school budget.

It's possible that the figures could be shared at next week's joint meeting. But it's uncertain whether the meeting will still be held considering that Narold Webb, chairman of the board of commissioners, is still recovering from last month's stroke.

Last month's joint meeting was cancelled.

One benefit of getting the enrollment projections out now is that they were reviewed by the current school board, whose members cited them to justify their use of mandatory year-round schools.

Although growth has slowed, board members said their past decisions to increase mandatory year-round has created additional capacity that will come in handy now that money is short to build new schools.

The response likely would have been different if the projections had been presented first to the new board.

We never be afraid that thieves carry their tools, but afraid they know some kind of technology.

Here is a way for parents to get a leg up

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that Rosewood Middle School in Goldsboro has come up with a novel fundraising plan after last year's chocolate sale flopped. The school will sell 20 test points to students in exchange for a $20-dollar donation.

Dismal

What kind of example do they think they are setting with this? This is just a dismal example of how far we've sunk.

It's a top story on the N&O home tab, too

There are bad ideas and really bad ideas - this one is definately in one of those categories.

Nixed

The school system just put a stop to the $ for grades venture. Thank goodness!

OT- CMS Assignment controversies

Read the articles....same issues no matter the location. (Also check responses too)

Yes, CMS has been going

Yes, CMS has been going through some assignment battles of late.  But keep in mind these are the first major battles since busing ended.  Over the past 5 or 6 years assignment has been done according to set procedure (and only to populate new schools, not for any kind of balancing act).  In both of these reassignment cases the board returned to the "old ways" of " taking" students from one school to reinforce another school.  This has resulted in unhappy families all the way around.  I think residents of Mecklenburg County have made it pretty clear they do not want this to continue.

Leesville area middle school

So with an additional middle school, the kids from Brier Creek can be close to home now, so it appears.

Happy thought for the day..... Only 20 days until the new school board takes office.

Happy happy Joy Joy

Happy Happy!  Joy Joy! :)

Hmm

Would it be inappropriate to show up to the school board meeting with balloons, confetti and streamers?

No Kool aid though

No Kool Aid though, must not let people drink the Kool Aid punch. I will be happy to provide new BOE water, coffee, tea or soda to take to meetings.

"Come in handy"

give me a break. All that capacity he speaks of is wasting money. LOTS of money. Let Chucky get frustrated, when Dec. 1st arrives and he's told to S T O P everything because fresh eyes are going to look at it and make Chucky's crew revamp their way of skewering the public, I guess he'll get the message then! I question why meetings need to be cancelled because of one board member's illness. Hope he's doing better, but we can't stop life because of it. Maybe that seat needs to be looked at. And to answer the question, certainly the timing is interesting, but irrelevant come Dec. 1st!

What is Dulaney thinking?

Let the existing BoE members enjoy playing politics for another couple weeks, it does not alter the fact that change is coming.

Dulaney stated that the new preliminary/final growth projections -- that have a history of being profoundly inaccurate -- are going to be used by staff to develop the new school system budget. How in the world can they proceed with preparing a budget without knowing what the new priorities are going to be? Surely Dulaney understands that the WCPSS will soon be heading in a new direction and that status quo priorities will no longer apply.
