WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Tier scheduling changes

Also today, the school board is going ahead with starting East Wake High later and Wendell and Zebulon elementary schools earlier.

But the board held off on tier changes to Conn, Barwell Road, Fox Road, York, Joyner, Rand Road, Wildwood Forest and Sycamore Creek elementary schools. (A lot of folks didn't want to be moved off the second tier.)

The board decided not to change those eight schools because staff wants to form a committee that would review the tiers for every school in the district. This could lead to changes for the 2010-11 school year.

I can't imagine why.....

The third tier has got to be the most unfriendly daily schedule for elementary school children. Trying to fit their after-school activities, homework, dinner, family time, play-time with friends, bedtime snack, daily reading and baths in before bedtime is nigh on impossible.

Our old district double tracked their buses - elementary runs and then the combined middle and high school run (the schools sit next to each other). The elementary schools start at 7:45 AM and release at 2:30 PM.

You've got to be kidding me

These changes are nuts....
