WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

The State of Things to discuss hiring of Tata today

Bookmark and Share

The State of Things will tackle the Wake County school board's hiring of Anthony Tata as superintendent on today's radio show.

Among the guests expected on the show will be N&O reporter Thomas Goldsmith, Kathleen Brennan of Wake CARES, former school board member Beverley Clark of the Great Schools in Wake Coalition and Steve Parrott of the Wake Education Partnership.

Unlike some of their broadcasts, there won't be a call-in segment today. The show will be taped later this morning and aired at noon on WUNC-FM 91.5.

The noon broadcast conflicts with the start of today's school board work session. But the podcast should go up later this afternoon. You can also catch a repeat at 9 p.m.

North Carolina Public Radio has discussed Wake several times over the past few years.

CORRECTED TO SAY THAT STEVE PARROTT WILL APPEAR FROM THE WAKE ED PARTNERSHIP

CORRECTED TO SAY THAT BEVERLEY CLARK AND NOT YEVONNE BRANNON IS REPRESENTING GREAT SCHOOLS IN WAKE

I listened to this on the radio today.  Beverley Clark surprised me by not slamming Tata.  She actually said that a background in education wasn't a necessity for a super but it would be an asset.  I agree with that.  She was much more level headed than Brannon has been.  Smart move on GSIW's part to go with Clark.

The UNC reporter was biased in how he asked/phrased his questions which was no surprise but Goldsmith was less biased than I thought he would be.  The UNC reporter kept saying that WCPSS was named one of the top 10 school systems in the nation.  I don't recall seeing this anywhere and he didn't cite the source.  I know that he was alluding to the NY Times article from several years back (which was later shown to be not so accurate) but I really don't remember anybody ranking us as a top 10 system.  WCPSS is a good system but there is no way that we are one of the top 10 in the US.

...

Top 10 in what? ;-)

has there been a change to

has there been a change to the guest line-up?  from WUNC's site:

Tommy Goldsmith, education reporter for The News and Observer of Raleigh; Steve Parrot, head of the Wake Education Partnership, a non-profit advocacy group; Kathleen Brennan of Wake CARES, which helped elect the school board’s Republican majority in 2007; and Beverley Clark, who served on the Wake County school board member for 10 years before stepping down in 2007.

Yevonne was apparently

Yevonne was apparently supposed to be there originally. Beverley Clark is also a GSIW member so she's representing the group instead.

Interesting that the N&O is

Interesting that the N&O is sending Tommy Goldsmith instead of Ford or one of their other columnists.  Then again, Goldsmith has been masquerading as an unbiased reporter for some time, nice to see the pretenses dropped.

Keung, please don't feel compelled to respond.  I have always felt that your coverage represented the only unbiased view of WCPSS coming out of the N&O.

I've got to defend Tommy

I've got to defend Tommy here. He's a good reporter. I would have been swamped without his help the past 15 months. He's appearing today strictly to provide information and not to give an opinion. I've done the show in the past and we've always made it clear that we will answer questions to provide information, not to give our own opinions.

Keung, that is good of you

Keung, that is good of you to defend him, but we all read the paper and know the deal.

3 agasint 1 on NPR... hmmm,

3 againstt 1 on NPR... hmmm, so much for balance. Fortunately, Kathleen has rationality on her side.

As for Yevonne Brannon, she seems to have an enormous amount of time on her hands to attend interviews, board meetings, and rabble-rousing race-rustling events. Makes one wonder what the time committment is of an NC State professor. Does she have any actual responsibilities or obligations at her state-funded position?

...

Well, Brannon only has a few more weeks to complain until she has to start being supportive. I'm sure she'll take every opportunity until Jan 31st.

Why would that loudmouth

become supportive after all this? Nothing has changed for her. She's still miserably inept at accomplishing much, like Carolyn Morrison, and everything will still be all about race for her and the few that follow her every groan.
