WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

The Independent endorses Cathy Truitt in runoff

Bookmark and Share

The Independent is backing Cathy Truitt in the runoff for the District 2 school board seat.

In the endorsement, the liberal weekly says neighborhood schools are going to happen after last week's election results. The Indy calls the runoff a question of "whether the new board will manage the shift to neighborhood schools carefully or precipitously, and without regard to the consequences for low-income neighborhoods."

The Indy says Truit "promises to look before she leaps, and she may be a useful brake on the four other antidiversity members."

The Indy says that John Tedesco "is by his own description a politician who'll deliver fast action, without thinking carefully first."

The endorsement isn't a surprise considering how Indy columnist Bob Geary wrote a column last week urging moderates and progressives to back Truitt.

Previously, the Indy had backed incumbent Horace Tart in the general election.

No Chance for Truitt

Truitt got 23% of the vote. She has about as much chance of beating Tedesco in November as the proverbial snowball in Hell. WHY would anybody vote for a person with no more common sense than this?

Interesting

What makes you believe anyone who voted for Tart would flip over to Tedesco....that is 23%.  So immediately she is within 3%.  You obviously got your crowd out there for the previous vote.  It will be interesting to see who shows up in November.  I can't see you mobilizing many more people then you did before.  If anything you will see an increase of people that support the current school policies.

Could be interesting....

Have you honestly heard

Have you honestly heard anything this woman has spewed during the campaign?  Lies, negative attacks, flip-flopping.  Anyone with a clue and half a brain will surely vote for J Tedesco.  What we don't need is more lies, deception, and excuses.  J Tedesco is the man for D2, hands down.  There is no comparison.

"If anything you will see an

"If anything you will see an increase of people that support the current school policies."

District 2 has elected the change candidate in the past 4 school board races IIRC.  Yes, Tart ran on a change platform 4 years ago before he drank the kool-aid.  The current BOE policies have not played well in Garner or Fuquay.

In our favor, we finally

In our favor, we finally have a change candidate who understands what needs to be changed.  J Tedesco is our man.

Oh, it  will be

Oh, it  will be "interesting" ...

Tedesco will win in another landslide.

interesting

With all her flip flopping on the issues, why would Tart voters vote for her?

It will be interesting to see who pulls major $$$ out of thin air to support her.  I still wonder what the people had to gain by running that attack ad - why spend over $20K in the final days before the election... a school board election, no less?  What is there to gain here?  I'm not seeing that it's all about the kids here.

John Tedesco has been consistent in his message. Let's focus on education.

Heck just froze over ;-)

I actually agree with most of you regarding your mixed message and think she handled the Ron thing poorly.  Still, it will be interesting to see who shows up.

OT: Matt Eisley's column

In today's North Raleigh News, Matt Eisley had some zingers and some good insight:

It's almost as though Wake County's school leaders dared voters to defy them . . .
I think the vote was a repudiation of the school board's persistent disregard of the reasonable concerns of decent, hard-working, middle-class families
. . .
"We've pushed them too far, and now they've pushed the pendulum the other way," outgoing school board member Lori Millberg said ruefully.

Interesting that it took an election for Lori Millberg to finally understand.

It just gets crazier. Damn,

It just gets crazier. Damn, you can't make this stuff up. LOL

well...

"Previously, the Indy had backed incumbent Horace Tart in the general election"

we all know how well THAT turned out....good let them back her, that's better for John anyway!
