WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system as it prepares to undergo historic changes. Will the new school board scrap the diversity policy in favor of neighborhood schools? Will year-round schools be converted back to a traditional calendar? How will the new board respond to  growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

It appears that any anti-Tedesco effort in District 2 has failed to derail his election.

With nine of the 21 precincts reporting, John Tedesco has 79 percent of the vote. Cathy Truitt has 20 percent. Write-in votes account for 1 percent.

UPDATE

Wth 18 of 21 precincts reporting, Tedesco has 75 percent. Truitt has 24 percent.

Thank you

I humbly thank you Wake County - whoever you are and wherever you are - you have changed things for the better for Wake County kids.

Pinch me

It's been a long time coming, but we now have a board where I know that the majority will actually listen to parents - even parents they disagree with. I don't even have the words needed to adequately thank everyone for stepping up and speaking out - and most of all, for not giving up! I feel like I'm dreaming!

Congratulations John!!!

Ouch!

better than an H1N1 shot!

Score

Wake County Parents: 4; social theorists from Rochester and TX: 0

A big, fat, higher-than-normal-turn-out-for-an-off-year-election REPUDIATION.

Well done, Moms and Dads.

Drink your Gatorade, the fight has only begun.

Indeed, the fight has just begun

This is the first step in what will be a long journey that will require perseverance, wisdom, a sense of fairness, and commitment to all students. I am glad a message has gone out to the nation that Wake county parents are vexed with busing for social engineering.

Don't forget about

MANDATORY Year Round Schedules, poor planning, vile and calumnious ad hominem insults towards dissenters, "shut up and put up" attitudes from the BoE and WCPSS, oh, my, there is so much sewage to wash out.

Congrats John!!!!

Congrats John!!!!

I first want to say to

I first want to say to g88ky07...I don't know you, but I have read the blogs here for several years now. I never thought this day would come where the parents REALLY jumped up and made a change and made a HUGE STATEMENT! I am very glad you have finally seen this day come. You are not the only one that has pushed for this...I am very happy for all of you, for your CONSTANT dedication and debate on the issues that this county has. YOU GUYS did an AWESOME JOB. No matter what the new board is able to do, I honestly feel we have open minded board members that WILL LISTEN to teachers and parents. John, I'm so glad you made it! You are one to be admired, you worked very hard and were very dedicated from the first day. You did not let up one day, although I don't know how maintained that positive outlook...because I'm not sure I could have kept my cool dealing with Truitt the past 2 or 3 weeks. You certainly know how to stand your ground, keep a CONSITENT focus and never once "coward down" to the negativity. You ran an HONEST campaign. This is a great day!!!!

Goose bumps for all!

In John's multiple interviews this evening his passion shines through just like it has from day one.  Amazing.  He never waivered, he never slowed and he never stopped.  He showed up where he wasn't wanted, he sat in a church with people preaching against him, he took shots from people who are clueless, he reached out to everyone, his supporters stood strong and now the children have limitless futures, the parents can get a little sanity back and this truly is a great day!

Debra and Deborah standing next to John was a great moment this evening.  December 1st can't get here fast enough.  As Rick Flair says in the education lottery commercial,

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

really?, what?? who? (are you drinkin' champagne too??? :>)

for all five candidates last month

I hope they meant it when

I hope they meant it when they said they want to improve education for poor kids. And I hope that what they propose really works.

I also hope they were serious when they said they liked magnets, and hopefully they will still play a role in diversity. It would be tragic if they don't.

I hope too

I hope that they will make magnet applications a fair and square one. Not engineered to favor the "elite".  The people's uproar about magnet schools is not about the busing but about the discriminatory selection process.

what's "tragic" is how WCPSS

what's "tragic" is how WCPSS has been failing "poor kids" for years as the EVAAS vs. Effectiveness Index has shown and that the system itself has been hiding it.  Their diversity policy has been a sham and people are finally realizing it.  the "tragedy" is that it has taken this long and let that many kids down along the way.

It would be tragic to

It would be tragic to continue playing diversity games at the expense of a quality education. Skewing education resources to nourish a social petri dish undermines the primary objective of education. I don't see why the new Board should be expected to work miracles. Just leveling the playing field for ALL students and ensuring equitable distribution of resources would be ample. It should be up to parents and students to complement the efforts of the teachers and the Board.

"ensuring equitable distribution of resources would be ample"

The above statement is somewhat of a red flag for those in the "loyal opposition".  Who decides what is equitable?  Will resources be distributed where needed or will they be distributed equally?  Now, the real struggle begins.

Yup

And that's why I don't like the word "equitable" -- it's just too easy to justify something because it's "equitable" or criticize it as "ineequitable."  Without an objective definition, it's just a word used to beat up your opposition.

Are you sure it wasn't

ekitable?

And what about the choice of

And what about the choice of parents who believe diversity IS an essential part of a quality education?  Will we be heard too?

AND WHAT ABOUT THE CHOICE OF

And what about the choice of parents who believe choice IS an essential part of a quality education?  Will we be heard too?

Well, duh!

If the selection process for magnet schools applicants is conducted fairly, there will still be diversity.

I am confident that...

you will be heard much louder than those thousands of citizens who, early in the game, openly opposed the forcing of YR school attendance, for valid reasons. They weren't given the time of day. Maybe now that they've had to put up with hardships on their families for several years, they'll get a breather.

I'm still wondering who decided that parental choice=anti-diversity.

My faith in Democracy is alive again !

Way to go District 2! I once saw this as an almost impossible task since the deck was so stacked against change. The truth will set us free!!

John has worked tirelessly

John has worked tirelessly for the children and families and constituents of Wake County......and they have SPOKEN!
Congrats John!

WAY TO GO JOHN!

No one deserves this more than John does! Way to go voters, volunteers and supporters in D2, you did it!
It's finally over. All the on again, off again, on again politics is over! Reverend, don't bother, we got nothin' for ya'!

A 4th and final victory for parents! Now on to re-tooling this broken system!

CONGRATS JOHN TEDESCO, D2 and all of Wake County!!!!!!!!!!!

I gladly owe you that 6 Joe!

woohoo!
