WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Susan Evans on tonight's election victory

Bookmark and Share

Here's new Wake County school board member Susan Evan's statement following her victory over board chairman Ron Margiotta:

"I am humbled to be here in front of you tonight.  I am very grateful for the tremendous amount of support and encouragement I have received during this effort.  But mostly, I am proud that our community has voted to move forward and to continue working together in providing the best possible public education for ALL of our students.

It has been a tumultuous time for the Wake County Public Schools and our community.  I'm ready to help our community put the divisiveness behind us and to focus on thoughtful solutions that will strengthen education opportunities for our students and provide necessary support for our teachers.

I also want to let the people in my district know how much I have appreciated their input in these past few months and that I will be taking everything I learned from them to heart.  I pledge to work for policies that balance as many of the things that my families have told me are important to them, as is possible.

I couldn't possibly be able to thank everyone who has helped out with my campaign, my I wanted every single one of you to know how much it is appreciated.  I am especially grateful for the group of citizens that have been working together with me, tirelessly for these past couple of years, in an effort to bring awareness to the issues facing our school system.

Today's elections are the culmination of a tremendous effort to remind our community that we are all in this together.  I promise to do all that I can to keep the reputation of Wake County schools strong and to keep Wake County an attractive place for businesses and for families.  Above all, I pledge to PUT STUDENTS FIRST on my agenda!"

Breaking up Wake County School district

I'm wondering if the  Wake County School District has just gotten too large and should be cut in half.  Seems like the county is really split politically and want very different things.  The people inside the beltline (the majority of the seats up for election this year) want 1) their exclusive status in magnet schools presereved (for many it's their base school so they don't have to worry about that pesky lottery), 2) forced bussing to spread the low performing students out of the downtown magnets and into the "burbs", 3)blocking low performing students from higher math b/c of the impact this would have on test scores,  4)reinstating mandantory YR b/c it gives higher capacity to schools in the "burbs" so they can better achieve objective #2. Now I know, anyone who disagrees with them are called racists and they claim the moral high ground.  But we all know it's a rouse - not interested in diversity per se, but rather bussing low performing students out of their schools.

Maybe we should cut Wake County School District in half.  Have low performing students in BOTH districts.  Shorter bus rides.  That way we wouldn't have SE Raleigh students riding the bus for over an hour each way to go to Panther Creek.  They could actually use that time for studying instead.  You could actually have magnets in BOTH districts too instead of them all being concentrated in downtown Raleigh.

With the election of the new board, seems like the new student assignment plan is toast.  Back to square one and constant redistricting??

Congratulations Susan!!

I look forward to seeing you and the rest of the newly elected BOE making sound decisions for all of the students in Wake County, and working together as a team.

Congratulations

Wonder what Ron had to say when he called Ms. Evanx to congratulate her on her outstanding victory?

I'm sure he asked her

to go ahead and pencil him down to do his taxes during her spare time between lawsuits, protests, arrests, accreditation being pulled, 2 minute songs at board meetings and trying to wake Debra Goldman from her slumber to find out how she might vote next time.

Animals

As Ron would say "looks like the animals in Apex got out of their cages and voted" - Except they didn't vote the way he thought they would vote.

Kudos to the magnet parents

for getting out the vote.  Now they don't have to worry about anyone taking away their free private school education.  And, they can get right to work on keeping the poor and minority kids out of those higher level math classes.  Bravo!

I Wonder If She Still Believes

Western Wake kids have a narrow view of the world in their homogeneous environments? I would hope that she doesn't still have that view of the parents and kids she is going to be representing!

My faith in our community

My faith in our community has been restored!  Thanks to all who voted.  Evans and the other new board members will stop the divisiveness of the past two years and work to make us proud of our school system again.

What time is the Whaler Cane/Herman Cain

victory bash at your house?

Should we bring our own antibiotics?

I can't tell you how

I can't tell you how disgusting it makes me feel to hear you say that your faith in our community has been restored. It is an egregious insult to me and many others.

What RM was saying and doing...

was an egregious insult to me and many others.

GOOD...

...because the people have spoken! The good citizens of Wake County have been insulted, AND embarrassed by the right-wing clowns you installed to make us the laughingstock! We're just ONE MORE ELECTION AWAY from returning our school system to sanity!

Need a tissue?

Should we call you

Should we call you AgentThinker or ClearWood?

Apex, the CPA has come to save you

Roll your pennies!

And say good bye...

to the guy with no degree at all!

So a guy needs a degree to

So a guy needs a degree to earn your respect. That shows some real class (sic).

You have no idea...

on how to use "(sic)", do you?

"Although the term SIC is

"Although the term SIC is used to preserve a particular phrase or spelling, it can also be used for the sake of humor or in a scathing or sarcastic way."

What's the matter, don't you have a degree?

Nope....

Dropped out of high school ('cuz I was not good at math) and started my own derivatives trading business when I was nineteen. And now I am a multi-millionaire.

Join the club! Good for

Join the club! Good for you!

But why criticize a man who had to drop out of college in order to support his family? That seems awfully insensitive.

?

Last week we said good bye to a guy with no degree at all also, Steve Jobs. The presence or lack of a college degree does not tell you abilities of the person.

For every....

Steve Jobs (and Bill Gates) you show me, I will show you a hundred thousand burger flippers.

And I assume you dropped out of college and became a multi-billionaire too?

No I graduated from college

No I graduated from college but unlike you I understand it takes more than a degree to make it and I don't look down upon those who do not go to college or drop out. (add Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerburg, and Harry Truman to your list to help offset some of those burger flippers)

You can keep adding to that....

list.

And you are right, RM fits right in with all those people you mention.

HMMM....

...Mark Zuckerburg, Harry Truman, Ron Margiotta...somehow, that just doesn't sound right!
