WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Successors to Rosa Gill lining up for Wake school board

Bookmark and Share

The game of guessing who wants to replace Rosa Gill on the school board is well underway.

Board members say they've been contacted by people interested in filling the soon-to-be vacant slot. As noted in a previous post, the board agreed Tuesday on the procedures that will be used to appoint a successor.

Two people whom Gill had indicated are interested in the job — PTA volunteer Jonica Rowland and retired principal Alice Garrett — were at Tuesday's board meeting. Garrett was there in her role as education chairwoman of the Raleigh-Wake Citizens Association to present Gill a silver bowl.

Gill has also said that retired principal Lillian Lee and the Rev. Johnny Darden are interested in the seat.

Paul Terrell, who had unsuccessfully run last year against Dan Blue for the state House seat now being taken by Gill, also said he'll apply.

Other names that have been floated around include Venita Peyton and Bernard Allen Jr.

In the case of Terrell, Peyton or someone with similar views, it would be unlikely that the board would choose that person. Odds are the board will pick someone who supports existing policies such as the diversity policy.

While most of the board has changed since 2001, keep in mind that Ron Margiotta didn't get picked for the vacancy when he applied. He had to win at the ballot box against the board's candidate.

Venita Would Have My Vote

http://venitapeyton.com/2009/06/im-applying-to-wake-co-school-board.html

SE Raleigh deserves to have

SE Raleigh deserves to have somone like Venita to represent them.  Finally they can have someone who can keep it real, get REAL input, wants children and families to suceed yet be accountable, not relying on tired old rhetoric to keep this school system coasting along with little to no improvement, especially in areas where we need it most.

Some of the others I have seen mentioned offered just the "same old, same old" and it's not WHAT you know, but WHO you know kind of attitude.  Venita is nothing like that, she truly cares, she's not a "politican" in the sense of Raleigh politics, she's a "person- who is in politics" for the betterment of OTHERS, not for a seat in the House as HER driving purpose.

Let's hope the BoE DOES make this as public as they've said and let the PUBLIC see what is out there and what Venita could bring to the BoE....SE Raleigh could ONLY stand to win.....

Mine, too

Venita appreciates a diversity of perspectives, can think outside the box, is straightforward and wants to work toward helping improve education for the students with new ideas. She would be a breath of fresh air.

There is a Candidate for D2

There is a Candidate in the wings for District 2

I have not officially made a public announcement here, as to my intentions, but, I have been in discussions with parties close to the WCSA, WCTA, and others. But, there is no time like the present.

My name is Arnold Osborn, I am officially a candidate for the Board of Education of Wake County in District 2.
My website is located at http://boe.arnieosborn.com and I will have an official press release ready for Monday.

Anyone wishing more information is welcome to contact me via email or phone...

Actually there is more than one

but, we will check out your info.  Maybe your website spells it all out, but I'll ask anyway, how do you feel about FYR??  How do you feel about converting MOST of these schools back to trad. cals. except where capacity is just screaming for help?  NOW, not to study it or wait 5 years, but NOW???!!!???   How do you feel about reassigning kids out of schools to fill up new schools while NOT replacing those kids and have more classes and tracks collapse at an FYR while principals are forced to FORCE parents to change tracks because of that stupid decision?  Sounds like you're not a fan of busing, so you're on the right track in that department!  How do you feel about running against Horace Tart who will whine that he's voted with Ron the last several times and is listening to parents, YET, voted for converting schools and voted for reassigning kids and not replacing them???  How do you feel about running against his, " i'm going to fight for ONE school to have Vo-Tech programs while the rest of you don't get anything and I will say or do anything to be re-elected" stance??   How do you feel about having his Mayor bud(s) support him and not you?
How I feel about the latest report about not busing long distances is basically how I feel about most lies they spew, they are LIES, SPIN and BS!
It's the same way I feel about Horace Tart trying to spin the 25,000+ reassignment plan for the next 3 years by telling us it's "really less than 10K" yeah right!
Those of us in D2, and there are MANY ready for change, are listneing.

Great Question...

Since  you asked... Let me answer  you with no BS...

I have copied and pasted your questions exactly as you have asked them here and posted them and the answers directly to my website becuase I believe that everyone should know where each candidate stands on those exact issues... and I would challenge and welcome the other candidates to answer these questions as well.

Stop by http://boe.arnieosborn.com and I have it posted as Where Do I Stand?

Great Question...

Response is at

http://boe.arnieosborn.com and I will have it posted as Where Do I Stand?

Congratulations!

To my knowledge, you are the first person to announce his/her candidacy on this blog!

Your webpage speaks a lot of common sense.  Keep it up!

Down the road.....

Just remember folks, next year the WCPSS will be asking for another $500-$800 million dollars in bond money and the school districts remade for the new census data. There is a lot at stake in the near future.

Composition of the school board

Please join WSCA in Knightdale to discuss positive and refreshing changes to the Board of Education. We currently have two candidates backed : Chris Malone - District 1 and Deborah Prickett District 7. They will be at the WSCA meeting and will speak.

Thursday. June 18, 2009 @ 7:00 - 9:00 PM
Location:
Town Council Chambers in Knightdale
950 Steeple Square Court, Knightdale, NC 27545

When the status quo addicts

When the status quo addicts start attacking WSCA and your candidates, they will only look more bumbling and idiotic than they already are; if that is even possible. Thank you for keeping it real and honest and positive. Keep forging on with your heads held high. Change is coming to WCPSS and it's gonna be good.

What about D2?

What about D2, am I going to have to run!?

No one will question your

No one will question your passion and commitment to stopping the insanity. Go for it! Talk about making the BoE run scared.

Thanks!

There is NO question that we need more folks, in all aspects of government, who are not afraid to take on the fight and be politically incorrect when required.  To tell them, no, you're wrong and that's NOT how we're going to do it!  The WCPSS needs as many fighting against them as they need fighting for them at this point.  Once the wrongs are made right THEN we can all work together to achieve success beyond anything experienced in Wake County to date!

No one will question your

No one will question your passion and commitment to stopping the insanity. Go for it! Talk about making the BoE run scared.

No, you're just going to

No, you're just going to have to be patient.

What, you wouldn't want me to run?

We've been very patient, the time window to file is short and quickly approaching, but I'll hang in there a tad longer before I total up my war chest, print the signs and contact the media.

Tell me about your war chest...

So, Tell me about your war chest, (Smile)

Actually, every candidate needs funds to help them win an election, BUTI feel that too many people already have their hands deep enough into your pockets.

Instead tell me your ideas... tell me your WCPSS pains... tell me what areas you feel I can best help in...  Let's find our common ground.. and then let's find a common sense approach to fixing those issues.

Tell me how you feel about the latest report that says that WCPSS does not really bus children long distances.  It says that most children are really within 5 to 10 miles of thier of homes.  Oh wait, they failed to mention that was as the crow flies, not road miles.  That same 5 to 10 miles still equates to 30 to 45 minutes of bus time each way, and they fail to mention that the law allows the bus trip to be up to 1.5 hours each way for a child.   Let me ask you ... Does that seem like common sense?

Arnie Osborn
Candidate for the Board of Ed
Wake County  Dist 2

Rosa Gill was an affable

Rosa Gill was an affable doofus, kinda like GW Bush.

My animus against her is for one vote and one vote only, made in sheer ignorance and foolish impatience.

Move on!!

Jones

Rosa Gill is no longer a part of the equation. Put your energy to better use.

The ITB power brokers have

The ITB power brokers have already decided who is getting Rosa Gill's School Board seat, so why waste people's time on a farcical interview process? Rosa Gill was appointed to the NC House despite finishing 3rd in a straw poll. They can conduct all the interviews and polls they want.

As it is, Wake County citizens only get to vote for one of the nine school board member positions. In this case, even Rosa's own district gets no say in who their representative is. As the saying goes, "Just because it's legal, don't make it right." Wake County citizens deserve better.

AMEN!

No doubt this dog-and-pony show will distract the crowd while the handpicked successor is installed.

I hope you don't mind a re-write

In the case of Terrell, Peyton or someone with similar views, it would be unlikely that the board would choose that person. Odds are the board will pick someone who supports existing policies such as the fail-to-achieve-but-preen-like-it's-working “ diversity policy;” as well as oppose a meaningful partnership with the student's parents in a rich and productive collaboration.

There; that's better.

True. Sad but true. The

True. Sad but true. The dysfunctional majority of our BoE cares more about winning awards for their ineffective diversity policy than ever truly helping the children. Those showing an interest in filling Ms. Gill's vacancy who are truly responsive and realistic will just make the *status quo junkies* nervous. They will pursue status quo until the tide turns in October. Oh happy days are comin' soon!

Better?

I'm sure 'seperate but not quite "equal" ' was "better", too?

While we're rewriting, why don't we fix what you and others want to say:

"as well as oppose a meaningful partnership with only the rich student's parents, in a Ron Magrgiotta-exlcusive collaboration."

Not better, but accurate.

Better, Richer? Don't Think So

Why in the He** is that separate but equal mantra being bandied about - this is 2009 not 1962. Give it up. Do you really think only rich "equal" folks live in Margiotta's district. OMG! Come drive through Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay. You'll see our cultural diversity. As clearly as you should be able to see natural cultural diversity in WCPPS. Diversity in 2009 comes strangely in many different colors.

"Why in the He** is that

"Why in the He** is that separate but equal mantra being bandied about - this is 2009 not 1962."

Because that is all the status-quo supporters have to fall back on.

Can they claim that the MYR experiment has been a success? .....nope, it has wasted millions of dollars and enraged parents.

Can they claim that Wake County test scores are great? ..... nope, nothing distinguishing in our test or SAT scores.

Can they claim their economic diversity model is working? ..... nope.  They can claim it works in OTHER areas, but they have zero data to say it works here (and the persistent performance gap doesn't help them much).

Can they claim they have been responsible stewards of our valuable education funds? .... nope, not when we have bus maintenance scandals, cafeteria scandals, and land deals which were aborted when it was disclosed that WCPSS was letting themselves get ripped off.

They have nothing left to hang their hat on, so I would expect nothing less than a campaign of mudslinging accusations which are forty years out of date.  Perry Woods' comments here gave us just a glimpse of what is to come.  Stan Norwalk and his ilk are already beating that drum everywhere they can find people to listen.

To borrow a phrase from, well, Stan:  "It's time for a change."

Joe, Good to see you the

Joe,

Good to see you the other day at the WSCA event in knightdale.   I thought your group had some good ideas.  I think we should consider a KIPP pilot, although I do believe the numbers you are using to justify it are off.  If only saves money if you cut out athletics, band, etc.  That said, I'm open to the idea.

I do think the sarcasam and bitterness that was exihibited towards concepts like 'healthy schools' does not necessarily serve 'the children' well.  'The System' thrives on that emotion.

Your wrong about one thing.  There is a lot good to talk about out schools, and I will advise to do so.

I will also call out loose use of facts as well.

Good Luck, and whatever happens this fall, let's hope we can work towards the best schools possible regardless.

Respectfully,

Perry

Carycurmudgeon Solutions!

Carycurmudgeon

Solutions! Solutions!! Solutions!!! You are making your point invalid because you are beating a dead horse!! Not a part of solution-then u are part of the problem! We've heard all that rhetoric before!!!

As a teacher of 34 years I

As a teacher of 34 years I would think that you would see the value in Curmudgeon's post.  Much like a short history lesson, exposing what has happened and what must be stopped.  Although it is true a catch phrase can become a Mantra or Slogan can become just Rhetoric... are we remiss if we don't take the time to enlighten others as to the problem and why the status quo is a problem.

There are many elected officials in place who are very comfortable keeping what we have and there are folks out here who don't realize how far off course we might actually be.

I would think that you as a teacher would agree that a problem in the school system is the lack of parental involvement at the school level.  I don't mean to put words in your mouth but this is what other teachers tell me.  So if this is truly a major concern and I believe that it is a valid one, how do we improve that involvement.  It is a fact that children who are bussed from outside of their local community be it 5 miles or 10 miles (as the crow flies) have a lower parental involvement at the school level for PTA or after school events.  Maybe bussing or school reassignment is part of the problem.

We need to look at the issues that are hurting our children.  If you agree that lack of parental involvement is having a negative impact on our children then you must be willing to look at some way of helping our children.  We make issues where there are none, we call them by names that are unrelated, and we cloud the issue so that no one knows what in the heck is really going on.  This all comes down to simple evaluation skills.  Does 'X' hurt or help our children?...  Does it make common sense to do 'X'?

In your post Teacher you say to the CaryC... "Not a part of solution-then u are part of the problem" I have to ask you does this same statement apply to you.  When you don't stand-up to help fix the problems that are hurting our children are you not then part of the problem.  I can tell you that by my silence I feel complicit, so I am silent no more.

Beat that Horse...

Well I guess I will hear from PETA about that comment.  Curmudgeon, just keep beating... I don't care if it's a horse or a drum... you keep beating until there is no strength left in your arm and then if you have made enough noise, someone will step up and take over for you.

Let's never ever be politically correct again... let's all stand on principle... let's do what is right even if we are the only one doing it.

Push for change

Teacher,

If you read Curmudeon's other posts you'll realize that he/she is working to support the campaigns of candidates who will bring forward fresh solutions and listen to solutions. He/she IS part of the solution - we need to discuss and act. This person is doing both. Mainly we're all parents and need folks on the school board who will work diligently to do the research into valid solutions BEYOND the status quo. We're not education experts. But it doesn't mean we're not doing what we can to help pave the way for fresh ideas. Many of us in WSCA - and I suspect Curmudgeon may be one of us - are working our tails off.  Can always use more help. Are you interested? www.wakesca.org.

Accurate only in your head
