WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Still hoping for the $3 million

Bookmark and Share

The school board probably won't get the $3 million that was withheld for not meeting enrollment — or will it?

As noted in today's article, Joe Bryan, chairman of the board of commissioners, said he thought it was unlikely the current board would vote to give the money. But what about a future board later this fiscal year?

Things could change based on how the elections go for commissioners in November.

Control of the commissioners could shift if Democrats win all three seats, including the one now held by Kenn Gardner, the lone GOP incumbent on the ballot. Gardner could have a tough contest against Stan Norwalk, who was endorsed by the N&O's editorial board on Wednesday.

School board chairwoman Rosa Gill is diplomatic enough not to say whether she prefers Gardner or Norwalk to win. But Gill, a Democrat, said she's been invited to a Norwalk fundraiser.

Somehow Gardner seems not to have asked Gill to attend one of his events.

Gill said the school board will ask for the $3 million despite falling more than 2,700 students short of projections.

They all have to go......

Every been to a meeting at the WCC's? Harold is either drooling or falling asleep and Betty Lou looks bored and tired. And Norwalk is 72 I think. Nope, these folks need to retire to the rocking chair on the porch. Heck, Norwalk thinks the "Great Society" actually worked. He has also stated several times he is behind the "diversity at all cost" policies of the WCPSS.

I also found he won't answer the tough questions either, and no matter what proof you have, he will always fall back on his own fallacies. Mention John Locke Society around Norwalk and watch him turn red with anger. Bottom line: Another elitist NorEaster Liberal who thinks he is better/smarter than everyone else.

In the past, I have always used the endorsements of the NandO and who NOT to vote for. The editors at the NandO think if you are a property owner in Wake County, we all have money trees in our backyard.

Norwalk is a scary old

Norwalk is a scary old man....

Gardner did a moronic move with the aquatic center, but at least he's not like 100 years old and scary...why don't we ever get good candidates to vote for?  Where the heck are all the good, smart, young,(middle aged) people?  Oh, that's right.... out working for a damn living...!

Ehh...

Stan's posted here before. And, while I disagree with him on a few issues, I think he's right on others (and, I say this as a dyed-in-the-wool conservative). Here are a few places where I think he's rights:

1. Reduce MYR
2. Reduce use of trailers
3. Impact fees
4. Increased teacher pay
5. Canning the new "administrative building"

Unfortunately, he also seems to like the busing-for-diversity policy, which is a huge negative for me. And, many of his positions seem to revolve around schools, where commissioners have very limited control.

The real change needs to happen on the school board. The right board can, with time, undo a lot of the damage caused by previous boards and actually create world-class schools. The current board seems content if we don't have Detroit-class schools.

Norwalk is all talk.  He

Norwalk is all talk.  He can't affect any change on the school board, so he can talk and post all he wants... he's not going to change anyone's mind on that school board. They just all(ER) need to be voted out and smart people need to be voted on!

School Board

So, the questions we should all be asking Stan is whether or not he supports the at-large elections which are needed to bring in new leadership.

Curious minds need to know.....

Agreed.  Norwalk need to step up to the plate and indicate whether nor not he fully supports "At-large" elections for School Board members.  Of course, sortof knowing Norwalk, he will probably say "of course, it is only fair to have better representation on the School Board," then backstab his supporters like Lindy Brown.

For those who don't know, Lindy Brown ran on a campaign of ending Mandatory-Year Round Schools, made open promises at public forums, but as soon as she was elected, drank the WCPSS "kool-aid" and has been backstabbing taxpayers ever since.

I don't trust Norwalk nor any demokrat in Wake County as far as I can throw them.   We are in the mess we are in today because the demokrats of Wake County.  I am a voter and taxpayer, not a serf.

Lindy is completely useless

Lindy is completely useless as well.  Huge backstabber.

A lot of us will remember

A lot of us will remember what Lindy Brown did the next time she is up for election (2010).  Hope she's getting a head start on finding her next job.

Co. Commissioner candidates

First of all, I have the utmost respect for our wise "sages" who have lived life to its fullest on into their 70's and 80's. I do not believe there is a magic cut-off date when one can no longer effectively serve or contribute. To the contrary, I believe the "older generation" has insights and wisdom that we should be paying attention to and advice that we should be following! That being said, though, I couldn't help but notice the ages of the candidates who the N%O (Oct.1) is endorsing for Wake County County Commissioner seats. Norwalk is 76, Webb is 83, and Betty Lou WArd is 72. Where's the healthy mix of young and old? Again - no offense whatsoever towards these or any other senior citizens (I think I qualify now, myself), but it is just ironic to me that some of the same endorsers of these candidates are the ones questioning - based solely on the age factor - the qualifications of other candidates on the national and local levels. Doesn't surprise me though. I guess "change" is all well and good - as long as it's their kind of change. P.S. - nothing against Stan Norwalk personally, but if people will research, they will find big-time socialist agendas associated with his name. Talk about devisive - we're in for trouble if he gets elected. We all need to be actively involved in this election!!

   It's a disturbing

It's a disturbing trend that these older folks are running for elected seats.  Those of us who are in the thick of things ... like have kids in school who have to deal with the WCPSS on a daily basis... really need to start considering running for local council seats, school board seats, and even higher offices.

Senior elected officials are concerned only with "lower taxes", "healthcare" and getting to their golf games on Wednesdays and more bathroom breaks during long meetings.

Sure, give it to 'em! ;c )

Rosa, they'll give it to you when MONEKYs fly right out of your rump!
Can you pull that off after a delusional 2 hour visit to the buffet?

I know a bunch of out of touch, tired old board members that need to be cellophane wrapped and shipped to Zimbabwe from the UPS store!
Don't you!!

NO BOND!!!

there is no denying that the

there is no denying that the school system could use a large infusion of funds to bring it to a better level....NOT with current level of admin and representation....not in this lifetime.

"We're certainly looking

"We're certainly looking for our commissioners to be more sympathetic of the needs of our school system," Gill said.

 That's Gill-speak for:

"With Norwalk on the board, we are certain to receive all the funds we ask for. No questions asked."

If Norwalk is elected, hold on to your wallets folks.

How About Sympathy For Families?

"We're certainly looking for our commissioners to be more sympathetic of the needs of our school system," Gill said.

WELL...

"I'm certainly looking for our School Board to be more sympathetic of the needs of the families" said Lisa B.

Let's Make A Deal !

I see the opportunity for a compromise.

CC will show sympathy for BoE, but only after BoE shows sympathy for families.

Is it even possible with the current regime?

Still hoping for the $3 million

wel I keep hoping Santa is real (and will pay for all the Christmas presents) but then I realize....NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!

Vote out Harold, Betty Lou and keep out Stan....no money for the schools until they listen to the parents.
Since 1996, I keep thinking oh the school situation can't get any worse....and IT DOES, over and over and over again. Stop the madness.....
