Could the flap involving Wake County school board members Debra Goldman and Chris Malone affect the accreditation status of the district's high schools?
In a blog post Tuesday for the Progressive Pulse, which is maintained by the liberal N.C. Policy Watch, Lucy Hood points to the speculation from former school board chairman Ron Margiotta that Goldman might have voted against the zone plan in October 2010 to get back at Malone. The publicity about the 2010 police report comes as AdvancED is waiting for an update from Wake on how it's handling the concerns the group previously made.
Mark Elgart, president of AdvancED, has recently voiced his concerns about the new school board majority firing Superintendent Tony Tata and dropping the choice plan.
"Already displeased with the school board’s penchant for partisan voting, it will be very interesting to see what Elgart has to say about this new brand of partisan, or 'anti-partisan,' voting," Hood writes about Goldman's 2010 vote.

Maybe if GOP board member Mr. Malone can...
Thu, 10/25/2012 - 19:38 — paulastamestablish that sex education is a critical component of the new Common Core then AvancEd may give WCPSS a free pass for his alleged adultery, etc. I would hate to think that our kids could be blocked from going to the schools of their choice because Malone apparently couldn't keep his pants on. Could you imagine? His actions result in less options for our kids and he gets promoted to the General Assembly because "Bob_Sconce" and his GOP groupies say it's the "right thing" to do. Again - all soooo bizarre!

Thank You Wake GOP, WCSA and AFP!!!!
Wed, 10/24/2012 - 19:25 — bluedawgI think we all should take a moment and give thanks to the visionaries who worked so hard to get elected Goldman, Malone & Tedesco elected to the WCPSS School Board.
Thank goodness we avoided having Mr. Tart, Mrs. Nixon, Mrs. Rakestraw and Mrs. Simon on the WCPSS Board. After all, they may have actually stayed and worked out their term.
Tart, Nixon, Rakestraw and Simon may have focused more on the needs of our students rather than creating PACs (Tedesco) and "get their groove on" (Goldman-Malone) in order to meet the needs of WCPSS's students.
Tart, Nixon, Rakestraw, and Simon may have avoided elementary students getting off the after 8pm (remember the whole "busing debate").
What we got was bumbersticker politics....
WCPSS students deserve an apology from WCSA, AFP & the WakeGOP.
Was your kid's teacher
Wed, 10/24/2012 - 22:00 — getovritWas your kid's teacher pulled into a threesum with Goldman and Malone? Did your child learn less because Malone and Goldman were making out?
While I agree that some
Wed, 10/24/2012 - 21:02 — jenmanWhile I agree that some negatives came from the 2009 board, there were positives as well and I wouldn't trade those positives for anything.
We no longer automatically lower expectations for our students if they are low income and/or attend a high poverty school. Teachers are now able to get a more accurate look at whether or not they are effective with their students. Before, a student could actually do worse than they did the year before but the teacher could be rated as "effective". Hardly fair to teachers.
We now have an objective measure by which to place students into advanced math classes. We increased the number of student taking Alg in 8th grade and the scores went up.
Something has actually been done to address the issues faced by all of our schools. For too long many of our schools were ignored because they weren't the 'right' ones. I haven't agreed with all of the decisions that have been made regarding new programs, but I am thrilled that we are looking at new solutions. If I recall correctly, your own school benefitted from the small schools supplement, something that has been desperately needed for years.
With Nixon, Rakestraw, Tart & Simon on the board, nothing would have changed. We'd still be catering to the Raleigh power elite, ignoring struggling suburban schools, lowering expectations for low income and minority kids, and I highly doubt that any steps would have been taken to make WCPSS more parent and student friendly. The grandfathering and stay where you start proposal that Evans, Kushner and Martin support would have never happened without the 2009 elections. If Hill had been in charge this whole time, parents would still have little voice in the school system.
So yes, I will say thanks to WSCA for bringing change in 2009. It hasn't been perfect by any stretch but we are still on our way to something better. Hill and those like him can no longer stick their heads in the sand and pretend that these issues don't exist. We all deserve great schools, not just those who it is politically expedient to suck up to.
For all your griping about the GOP and their lackeys, you're just as bad. Another blind follower of a political party who can't look at the issues objectively. Shutting out Lindy for her vote on Rolesville High is a perfect example.
hmmm
Wed, 10/24/2012 - 20:14 — EBDarcyIf you believe what they say, the folks behind WSCA were political novices...who really didn't understand whose train they were hitching their wagon to. (I honestly think many of the people who voted for the candidates they endorsed (with little vetting it appeared at the time) didn't have a clue about the candidates' true agenda. I say that because the majority of the people I know who voted for Prickett, Tedesco, etc. were shocked and angered by their actions. The Wake GOP certainly took advantage of WSCA's hard work and was quick to claim credit for it's results.

WOW - shocking, Claude Pope
Wed, 10/24/2012 - 23:09 — loriacWOW - shocking, Claude Pope donated $100. How much did the Campbell's donate in the last election again? How much did Kevin Hill spend again to win by a slim margin as an incumbent? Not sure what your point is.
2009 was not managed by the Popes or the Tea Party. I guess it scares Dems to death to think that normal parents could actually make a difference in an election. Mr. Hill probably already sent Ms. Goldman an edible arrangement for taking the heat off him this week. If they are truly contemplating massive reassignments 'because they know better', it will happen again.
I Hope So...
Wed, 10/24/2012 - 17:29 — lovingpenelopeIf this DOESN'T play a role in the accreditation decision that AdvancED makes, then that organization and the role that it plays in governing school districts and boards is even more pointless than I thought.
I actually really HOPE WCPSS loses accreditaion over this -- that, paired with all of the other foolishness coming out of this district, it's a final straw for AdvancED -- and that the general public gets REALLY hacked off over it.
Maybe THEN the partisanship will stop and the board will realize that we really ARE fed up with the political games they are playing.

As long as our check clears
Wed, 10/24/2012 - 18:36 — starsonoursAs long as our check clears AdvancEd will provide accreditation
Exactly...
Wed, 10/24/2012 - 19:29 — bpuli9999who needs their accreditation.!
As long as we are willing to
Thu, 10/25/2012 - 19:10 — starsonoursAs long as we are willing to pay AdvancEd we will be accredited. Have you seen the list of poor performing schools that are accredited by AdvancEd? What does that say about their seal of approval?
Colleges
Thu, 10/25/2012 - 16:46 — GunshyI believe that most colleges will not accept class transcripts from unaccredited schools.
