WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

SPAN problems

The timing for this computer problem could be better.

The computer network that allows Wake high school students and parents to access electronic records, including changing courses, is partially down. You can't access the network from home so you'll have to go to a school or administrative building to log on.

Bill Poston, a school district spokesman, said they hope to have SPAN (Student/Parent Access Network) fully up by Friday or this weekend.

Wake began using SPAN in March 2005.

The SPAN system is designed to give high school students and their parents up-to-the-minute access to their electronic records, including schedules, attendance, and grades.

A Millbrook High School student said she was denied access to SPAN while on campus today. But Poston said students could have used SPAN at an open house this afternoon.

UPDATE

SPAN access has been fully restored.

SPAN follow up

Just answered my question by looking at the website. Millbrook uses the SPAN system for students to make Schedule change requests. But stdunts can not just log on and change their schedules. Guidance uses this as a communication tool. Looks like a good system , as long as the computer network is operational.

Are you sure about this???

"A computer system that’s supposed to allow Wake County high school students to change their courses"

Keung,

From our personal experience, students use SPAN to make course selections within a given time frame- the spring.
Over the summer, schedules and courses are put together, teachers hired and assigned to teach based on these course selections.

At our school, students DO NOT have free reign to change their classes thenselves through SPAN at this time. A visit to the Guidance office is necessary for any changes to course selection or schedule.

down ... really.......

Actually.. I question if it's really "down" or was taken down. ?????????

All those high school scheduling problems coming back to haunt WCPSS and they took it down so parents would stop calling?

No Blackboard Access

I suppose Blackboard is tied into this, right? I've tried to access it to keep up with what's going on in my son's classes and it isn't working either.

There is no connection

There is no connection between BlackBoard and SPAN.  BlackBoard is a site that teachers can use to post info on their classes for student and parent use.

Thanks for letting us know!

Thank Goodness! I thought it was me! I tried for a week to get in and was denied, denied denied and then it was just down!

Then back up... denied entry again....
back down... back up....................denied.......................
Thanks for letting us know

SPAN works for me

From the parent side, it worked for me on Monday and again just now. I was online Monday , and am able this second to view our new academic schedule, GPA, personal info, etc.

SPAN access

Techs are working on the system now as part of a test. This means, during the test, you might have access. But they're saying it's not guaranteed and it could go out at any moment.
