While the formal vote won't be until later this afternoon, it looks like consent forms won't be sent this year.
Several school board members repeatedly stressed at the COW meeting that families could have applied in February if they wanted to attend a traditional-calendar school. Around 95 percent of those 2,676 applicants were placed at a traditional-calendar school or magnet school.
Board members added that those families can still apply for transfers if the year-round calendar won't work for them.
One potential silver lining is that staff may look into placing transfer applicants into traditional-calendar schools that have space — with bus service provided. But school board member Patti Head said that wouldn't "honor" those people who applied in February.
School board member Lori Millberg said feeling sorry for the 1,166 non-consenting students who didn't apply in February is like feeling sorry for a person who doesn't have a job because he didn't file an application.
UPDATE
The board voted 5-2 to not send consent forms.
Beverley Clark, Eleanor Goettee, Patti Head, Anne McLaurin and Lori Millberg voted yes. Ron Margiotta and Horace Tart voted no.
Kevin Hill wasn't at the meeting and Rosa Gill didn't vote because there was no tie.

The 3 quitters will give
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 18:59 — Big_PictureThe 3 quitters will give 100% effort to continue running the system into the ground until the new BoE members are in office. Just why would they serve on a school board when they hate children and despise families?
Pathetic
Wed, 05/06/2009 - 10:20 — supportwcpssYou can say the BOE are not listening or are making huge mistakes with implementing policy but to claim a human being hates children and despises families is just pathetic.
But I forgot, you always take the high road. Pathetic
Just callin' 'em like I see
Wed, 05/06/2009 - 23:16 — Big_PictureJust callin' 'em like I see 'em. Truth hurts. Are you angry that you hitched your cart to a failing horse? Most of us want change for the better and not same ol' garbage on a different day.

Wed, 05/06/2009 - 11:19 — SideburnsThat's rich coming from someone who calls us morons.
ANd..
Wed, 05/06/2009 - 13:52 — supportwcpssbecause you say an off the cuff comment about you being a moron is the same as claiming the BOW hates children is the reason I call some morons.
Because those who hate children love taking a 14K job in which they are completely overworked and only hear complaining.
I can't fathom why they
Wed, 05/06/2009 - 23:25 — Big_PictureI can't fathom why they would take the job for only $14K when they despise family values. Retiring to spend family time? Yea right. Ask them yourself. Maybe they take out frustration over low pay on the families as a payback. Your guess is as good as mine.
Horace still showing sudden
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 17:21 — CaryCurmudgeonHorace still showing sudden religion. Too little, too late.
No
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 17:49 — g88ky07Horace is just voting with Ron to save face for his re-election campaign. Once again, Horace votes with Ron because he knows his vote didn't count, wasn't needed and it's a good thing to do when you want to LIE to the public a little more and act like you're "all about the people." BS Horace!!! TOO BAD HORACE! Old stench mongers like you are history bud!
H I S T O R Y!!!!
And when you're voted out this fall, we'll see if we can continue the fun for you with your other ventures!
Ego and Id
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 17:16 — SDR256You understand how unbelievably egotistical this is? Lori - and suspect the majority of them - really believe that every Wake parent is following their every move breathlessly. Yes, we here on this blog might be. We are a tiny minority.
But those 1200 (probably many more) parents who - OOPS didn't get the memo? Why? Were they moving in, did they have a death in the family, did they have a baby born, did they divorce, did they have a sickness in the family, did they lose their job in February - like many of us because it was a good time for the corporate taxes to let people go- or were they just simply personally connecting with their community, family and friends and ASSUMING that their Board of Education had their BEST INTERESTS in mind?
Poor saps. That's what she was saying. You miserable bugs beneath my feet.
Thanks Ego and Id
Wed, 05/06/2009 - 13:56 — RMC10You are so right about what else was going on that month in the world and economy, and that whole choice process is very obscure.
I do follow the blogs, the news, the school newsletters, WCPSS website, and we were waiting for the announcement about changing from YR to Traditional school as a mom of a rising 6th grader - and we almost missed the opp.
I had called Olive Chapel and Apex Middle and WCPSS every week, and was informed that the letter should be coming...
I couldn't figure out the process. I kept looking for the "form" on the website, and thank goodness I finally talked with a counselor from Apex Middle who told me you had to use the Magnet School Application Form , and mark it for Alternate Calendar Request which was on that form. That didn't make sense to me since we were not applying for Magnet school. But that was the right thing to do.(Who knew)!
WCPSS makes it hard to find that little "traditional" calendar choice box (and I'll bet that isn't by error or omission). Now it looks like they are going to just say sorry to the rest who might not have figured out the process.
This process needs to be made much easier and clearer for families.
keep it coming
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 17:24 — loriac"Board members added that those families can still apply for transfers if the year-round calendar won't work for them."
I bet many of these families get a big surprise when they get the letter in the mail that their kids are assigned to YR Track x that starts July 7. SDR - you are absolutely right - people are busy with their families and their lives, and they don't pay attention to all these hoops of fire that the BOE lays in front of them.
So - their choice will be accept the YR assignment, and deal w/ childcare or worse, latchkey kids. Or - apply for a transfer that has no transportation, which for many is NOT a choice.
The elections cannot come soon enough. Keep it coming.
Parents
Wed, 05/06/2009 - 12:17 — g88ky07deserve every miserable minute we get handed to us by miserable and sad people like Lori Millberg, Patti Head and Horace "I'm voting with Ron" Tart???
Know why?
Because it's our faults for burdening them by having children! What were we thinking!
I don't think its the rich
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 17:06 — jenmanI don't think its the rich who will get screwed in this. I think it will be a lot of lower income parents who didn't apply for their traditional seat in Feb. Just my guess.
Disconnect
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 17:20 — SDR256This is what happens when people start to disconnect from each other and expect that email and the newspaper is going to replace looking each other in the eye and meeting at the bus stop.
WE ARE HUMAN....
We need the human touch. Information is only information. But when your friend - on your block whom you trust and who lives like you - tells you, then you take it seriously.
This BoE - with the exception of Ron who keeps encouraging everyone to PHONE each other - has lost that connection. They are happy to send out electronic pronouncements.
And they shared about caring for the rest of the day
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 16:21 — FalcAnd they shared about caring for the rest of the day. That's the ending to a preschool boardbook we used to read the kids to teach them about caring about others. Prehaps some on this Board should try reading that boardbook.
"School board member Lori Millberg said feeling sorry for the 1,166 non-consenting students who didn't apply in February is like feeling sorry for a person who doesn't have a job because he didn't file an application."
From an earlier article - "James L. Jones, a Knightdale parent, has been hoping to opt out of sending his stepdaughter to the year-round program at East Wake Middle School. He said he hadn't realized he could have applied in February for a seat at a traditional-calendar school. "We just can't get any information as parents," Jones said.
Someone needs to let Mr. Jones know that hisBOE rep doesn't feel sorry for him because he is no better than someone who did not fill out a job application for a job that they did not know about. Someone needs to let Ms. Millberg know that it is difficult for her constituents fill out an application that they did not know about.
Why does someone with so little understanding and empathy for others want to be on a BOE in the first place?
???
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 16:07 — AngelaWyeah cause it's easy to vote for people who announced they WEREN'T running..
Why should they seek consent
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 15:37 — amedinaohWhy should they seek consent when many of you said that you would vote them out regardless or not vote for a bond.
Because it's the right thing to do?
Wed, 05/06/2009 - 05:08 — Dadof3Ethics and quid-pro-quo are two distinct concepts.
They absolutely shouldn't!
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 16:10 — g88ky07I hope they stick it to us goooooooooood. Keep it coming! They are spineless quitters and won't let us have the pleasure of voting them out. They just want to run it in the ground, I mean up our, as deep as they can before 3 of them QUIT! Nothing worse than a quitter, except for a quitter who doesn't have the spine to stand up to those they attempt to destroy! Horace will pay the price though, THAT can be counted on!
As for bonds, you are correct again, the future boe will pay the price for the past. I won't rest until the next bond is shoved so far up theirs JUST as they've shoved their agendas up mine! Failure to defeat will NOT be an option!

Great.....take it out on the kids. THAT'll teach them.
Yeah, been drinking some kool-aid
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 17:35 — g88ky07have you? It's never been about the "kids" so passing any future bonds will not be a priority! Who in their right mind would approve one now???
Sorry, we all lose, mostly because the voters of Wake County have allowed this to happen.
You can throw out all those "it's for the kids" stories you want, but it's never been about the kids. Not in the 6 years we've been here!
I have to agree that it's
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 18:34 — rr77rr99I have to agree that it's never been about the kids. It's about WCPSS always looking good! EOG's are coming up and the teachers are complaining a blue streak that even though they get a "bonus" based on performance, they are waiting for that rug to be pulled out from under them, so they are shrugging their shoulders like, "really, who cares at this point?"
The teachers are really teh only ones who truly care about the kids and not just what scores they get, but now, it looks like we are losing them, too.
Yeah, we got nothing left to lose. .. no bonds, stop volutneering in the schools, stop participating in the bogus PTA fundraisers where the PTA turns the money over to the principal and they spend it on anything they want... like not stuff they really need for instance....
its' really time for parents to wake up
And, by the way, everywhere I go I ask how parents feel about the court ruling and 9 times out of 10, the response, "What court ruling?"
There you go. Life is bliss in the dark.
Life is bliss in the dark

The Almighty OZ has Spoken
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 14:50 — JanisTangoLori really needs to count to 20 before she opens her mouth. She needs to take those 20 seconds to think about what she is about to say! Nothing but stupidity seems to come out of her mouth!
Does Lori think before she speaks?
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 14:04 — srhudson06Really, what a piece of work....How the heck did she get elected to begin with?
Boy, I didn't see that one coming
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 14:02 — fiestamom/sarcasm
But seriously, I AM kind of surprised. I thought they might 'lay low' until the elections were over to avoid angering potential voters.
But their love for punishing rich people, oops I mean "diversity" trumps all!
Knew we could count on Lori
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 14:00 — g88ky07we're so sorry we've been such a thorn in the empty place where your soul should go!
Mr. Hui, just go ahead and make it official that the gavel has been slammed onto parents one more time, no consent forms and take the rest of the afternoon off!
It's all a moot point a this stage!
...
Tue, 05/05/2009 - 13:28 — SideburnsWow, big shock.
Thanks, Lori. No one asked for your sympathy. They asked for your help.
