WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

School board members talking student assignment and politics tonight

Bookmark and Share

Wake County school board members will be out and about at different community events this evening.

The most media attention will likely be placed on the forum that board vice chairwoman Debra Goldman will hold at Cary Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. to hear residents talk about student assignment. Board member Deborah Prickett, who got into a heated exchange with Goldman last week, said she'll also attend.

There's word that board chairman Ron Margiotta may also be in the audience to hear Goldman tonight.

Board members Carolyn Morrison and Anne McLaurin will meet with parents at 6:30 p.m. at Daniels Middle School to talk about student assignment.

Board member Keith Sutton will likely talk about student assignment at a PTSA meeting at 7 p.m. at Enloe High School.

Board members Chris Malone and John Tedesco will be hosting a reception for  Republican state House candidate Duane Cutlip at 6 p.m. at Heather Hills Clubhouse in Garner.

Keung - will you be covering

Keung - will you be covering the Goldman mtg. tonight?

One of my colleagues will be

One of my colleagues will be attending the forum at Cary Town Hall.

Hmmm...

Thought the Board was non-partisan.  Malone/Tedesco - why don't you just slap a elephant tattoo on your forehead.

Accusations of partisanship

Accusations of partisanship are silly. People have values and beliefs and they act in acccordance with those. It isn't a costume one wears when convenient. It isn't just the BOE members who indulge in this. Dr. Burns, with his social justice agenda and political endorsement, is no different. I don't see it as wrong. Better to have it out in the open than labor under the pretense of non-partisanship.

One could say that until the

One could say that until the board member not only goes to, but SPEAKS at a tea party rally. Comeon now, you'd have to be pretty under-a-rock to not see a total partisan break in the board.

And being the head of the

And being the head of the local Democrat party (Rosa Gill)doesn't mean you are partisan does it? I am sure that doesn't count as partisanship.

Not Surprised

Looks like Malone & Tedesco have more important things on their minds then the Wake County Schools - Attending/hosting a function like this instead of working with other board members and attending board functions tonight shows they don't really care about the schools and children - I believe this also shows that these two grown men are pouting because things didn't go their way last week - Wonder who is next for Tedesco to start calling names (shows his true character).  Also appears that goo goo eyes Malone follows Tedesco's foot steps whereever he goes.  What a pair !!!!!!!

Pfft...

There are no board functions tonight.  As to "working with other board members," are board members supposed to spend every waking hour on board matters?  Good grief.

?

Board members are elected in non-partisan races.  But, that doesn't mean that individual board members are neutral.  Heck, Rosa Gill was a former chairwoman of the local Democratic Party.  And, Anne McLaurin has been at various Democratic party events.
