WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

School board makes high school principal changes

Bookmark and Share

The Wake County school board moved one high school principal to Central Office this evening and transferred another principal to a different school.

John Williams, the principal of Middle Creek High School in Cary, was appointed senior director for high school education. The job became open after Ruth Steidinger switched to being senior director for middle school education.

Williams opened Middle Creek in 2001 and will leave the school on Nov. 1. Thomas Dixon will serve as interim principal at Middle Creek, Dixon, the former longtime principal of Apex High School, will receive a salary that's equivalent to $131,580 a year.

Teresa Pierrie was named the principal of the new Wake Leadership Academy for Girls, one of two recently approved single-gender schools that will open next year. She's been principal of the Wake Early College of Health and Sciences in Raleigh since 2008. Her salary will be $102,256 a year.

Edward Gainor's contract as interim principal of Brassfield Elementary School in Raleigh was extended into November. He's receiving a salary equivalent to $105,490 a year.

Gainor has held the job since Pamela Kinsey-Barker left Brassfield to become Area Superintendent for Northern Wake.

Not enough....

Over the past couple of years, I've realized how important a school's principal is to the education at that school.  In my view, $105K/year is too low for that position.

totally agree

I agree with you Bob.  When I think of all the people I know who earn $100,000 and up and what their jobs entail, compared to what a principal deals with daily and is responsible for, it amazes me that anyone would want the job.

Salaries are based on a

Salaries are based on a combination of the person's education experience and the size of the staff. That's why principals at Wake's biggest high schools often have to take a pay cut or have their salary frozen to take jobs in Central Office. Gainor's years of experience means his equivalent salary is much higher than for the typical elementary school principal. Click here to view Wake's pay scales for principals.

THanks...

Any clue if "Years on License" refers to the teaching license, or something else?   If it's just a teaching license, then the first few rows there are (or, at least, should be) irrelevant since nobody becomes a Principal immediately after getting their teaching license.

It's the number of years

It's the number of years they've been licensed as a teacher. All the salary schedules start with people with no experience.

Mr Hui

Just curious, is that $105K + the pension for Gainor?

Nope that's his salary,

Nope that's his salary, aside from whatever he would get from the state's retirement system. He's won't get $105,000 unless he stays on a full year, which would not be the norm for interim principals. He gets slotted into Wake's pay scale for principals of his experience, which would equal $105,000 over a year. It's probably better to look at what his monthly salary would be.
