WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Candidates won't officially begin filing for Wake County school board until Monday but candidate forums have already been scheduled.

WakeUP Wake County and the League of Women Voters of Wake County has already announced the dates, times and locations for forums that will be held for each of the five school board races.

The District 3 forum will be at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 at Church of the Nativity, 8849 Ray Road, Raleigh. The District 4 forum will be 7 p.m. on Sept. 15 at Walnut Creek Wetland Center, 950 Peterson St, Raleigh.

The District 5 forum will be at 7 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, 3313 Wade Ave., Raleigh.

The District 6 forum will be at 7 p.m. on Sept. 8 at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4921 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh.

The District 8 forum will be at 7 p.m. on Sept. 27 at Carey C Jones Community Building, 309 Holleman St., Apex.

You can register online here for the events.

Whether all candidates attend, particularly the Republican ones, remains to be seen. WakeUP Wake and the LWV say they're non-partisan but they're more associated with the candidates who support the old diversity policy.

The Great Schools in Wake Coalition is a project of WakeUP Wake.

The League of Women Voters supported the old diversity policy and criticized the process used for adoption of the new school board election districts.

Question #1:  There are

As a voter my first question is:  There are some sitting BOE members and candidates running that want to reform the system.  Candidate:  What SPECIFIC reforms (list them all) do you want to enact; and HOW (what steps/measures) do you plan to enact them?

So, the largely democrat

So, the largely democrat groups will sponsor forums like they have done in the past, will the republicans be sponsoring a forum and have dates been set yet for that?  I would think both sides would want to ask questions and verbally "frame" the debate to their liking.  Have the candidates in the past attended each sides forums?  Will the forums be streamed live by wral or any other entity?

yes to your second question

The forums I attended involved candidates who were Dems, Repubs and those claiming to be unaffiliated.  I got the impression that everyone was invited.

Forum questions

Good questions like Dr. Factual make for good forums. Submiting questions both at the forums and online through the forum and/or this avenue is a good idea. Participation on any level by all parties will make these forums productive , informative, and helpful in understanding the values, direction, and plan candidates  to take wcpss.

wakeupwakecounty and The League of Women Voters are using their resources, time, and their money to create these forums for the public. It is the publics' decision whether they become useful. We do this by all candidates and citizens participating, attending, and asking good questions. Wake County citizens want what is best for Wake County and the right direction for our public school system  makes for a better, stronger, and more prosperous future. It  involves us all coming together discussing the issues and truly listening with clear, intelligectual debate so realize what we have and work together so these assets we have grow to form a vital future.

Forbes rated Raleigh # 2 in being best positioned to grow and prosper in the coming decade.Ranking was based on  job growth, demographic factors. They measured rates of family formation (growth of children 5-17), growth in educated migration, population growth and  attractiveness to immigrants in places to settle, make money and start businesses.

College-educated migrants, new families and immigrants are critical in shaping the future.   No. 1 Austin, Texas, and No. 2 Raleigh, N.C., have it all demographically and are economic superstars, with job-creation records among the best in the nation.

Outstanding Opportunity for all

Harry_Moncelle

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about each candidate and what their goals are for public education in Wake County.  Thanks to both or this groups and their investment in the democratic process.

...

I'm surprised they didn't hold them all at Martin St Baptist Church. Or the new Democratic campaign office on East Hargett -- with their hired staff.
