WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

School board campaign mailers from Cathy Truitt and John Tedesco

Bookmark and Share

Here are a pair of mailers sent by school board candidates Cathy Truitt and John Tedesco.

In this mailer sent this week, Truitt calls herself "a new leader who will focus on our children, our schools, and our communities." She also calls herself the only candidate "with the leadership skills, experience and background" to serve District 2.

In a mailer sent last week by Tedesco, he claims that the school board, which he calls the board of directors, has been led too long by "retired educational administrators." It's a perhaps not too subtle jab at Truitt, who was a teacher and principal for 36 years.

"This is why we end up with policies like 'Wacky Wednesdays,' school on Memorial Day, children on multiple schedules in the same household, excessive parental mandates, and multiple reassignments," Tedesco says in the mailer.

I had a handout

from a forum similar to Ms. Truitt's mailer that found its way to the backseat of my vehicle where one of my children picked it up and read it. Ms. Truitt did not get my child's vote. My child wants to know why Ms. Truitt only cares about the schools in her area and not all the schools in Wake County. What about my school - aren't they supposed to care about all the schools? my child wondered.

My child did think community schools sounded like a good idea, which may be because she loves her community school even though Ms. Millberg calls it a "not the right" school. John Tedesco has been advocating for children and community from day one.

It's unclear to me how Ms. Truitt reconciles advocating for better SE balance and advocating for community schools. Would she allow diverse areas to go to their community school and only the less diverse areas would be bussed for balancing? Wouldn't that mean that some students will be bussed away from resources in their community school or when Ms. Truitt says community school does she mean something different than those with public-private support to provide resources where needed? Doesn't that get us back to where we are on the magnet program where many of the ED kids near the magnet school are bussed away from them for balancing?
