WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system as it prepares to undergo historic changes. Will the new school board scrap the diversity policy in favor of neighborhood schools? Will year-round schools be converted back to a traditional calendar? How will the new board respond to  growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Rosa Gill chosen for state House seat

Bookmark and Share

The executive committee of the Wake County Democratic Party has named Rosa Gill to fill the state House seat being vacated by Dan Blue.

Gill narrowly defeated Bernard Allen Jr. this evening, picking up 21 votes, one more than needed. Gov. Bev Perdue still needs to appoint Gill but under state law she has to take the Democratic Party's choice because Blue is from that party.

The school board will now have to pick a replacement for Gill's District 4 seat, which covers Southeast Raleigh. The other eight members will appoint a replacement to finish out Gill's term, which expires November 2011.

Her term as school board chairwoman expires Tuesday.

Gill, 65, a former teacher, state DMV administrator and Wake County Democratic Party chairwoman, has served on the school board since 1999. She has tried several times over the years to get a seat on the General Assembly.

Most recently, Gill had expressed interest in filling the state Senate seat of the late Vernon Malone. But Blue was appointed to take that seat, paving the way for her to get his post.

What a banner Fall we're going to have!

5 of 9 replaced by this fall, YEAH BABY!

Rosa, you won't be missed and it's nice to know YOUR damage to our children's education comes to end!

Testing the limits of the "Peter Principle"

Gill or Clark or Hill, these folks are really testing my faith in the Peter Principle.  I thought these folks had met and exceeded their limits of incompetence much earlier in their careers.

Oh well, and the rest of us taxpayers will pay the price for their "on the job" excellence!

Good Riddance

She should just retire forever.

It will boring.....

One does have to admit it will be very boring with Rosa gone as I found her "amusing." I will miss her hatred toward folks who actually work for a living.

Now she will be nothing more than another "puppet" at the State House.

Draft Venita Peyton!

Draft Venita Peyton!

Yea verily!

I second that motion!

wow! LOL..wow!

wow! LOL..wow!

what next? will the new

what next? will the new pick be Chair as well?

They're going to pick a new

They're going to pick a new chair on Tuesday long before they name a replacement to her seat. Kevin Hill and Beverley Clark still keep coming up as possible candidates for board chair.

In terms of filling her seat, they'll likely announce a time period for people interested in the position to submit their names.

Wouldn't it have to be one

Wouldn't it have to be one of those two?  Of the eight board members left on the island, four are lame ducks.  McLaurin rarely says much and does not all come across as wanting more of a leadership role.  And Margiotta doesn't win any popularity contests with the board.

Of the 2 Bev would be much

Of the 2 Bev would be much more effective.

A great loss to the Wake

A great loss to the Wake County school system!

I know you are joking.

I know you are joking.
