WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Ron Margiotta on his "bi-partisan support" from Wake County leaders

Bookmark and Share

School board chairman Ron Margiotta is promoting how "a bi-partisan group of Wake County leaders are speaking out in support of (his) leadership of the Wake County Public School System."

In a press release today, Margiotta says the statements show that he "is being recognized and commended for his commitment to Wake County schools as well as his continued focus on raising achievement for each student." Some of the names are who'd you expect, such as Apex Mayor Keith Weatherly, Holly Springs Mayor Dick Sears, Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams, Rolesville Mayor Frank Eagles and County Commissioners, Joe Bryan, Paul Coble and Tony Gurley.

But would you expect a statement from Knightdale Mayor Russell Killen? Killen spoke at the Friends of Diversity press conference just before the 2009 school board elections. He's also a member of the same law firm as Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker.

“Chairman Margiotta has taken an active interest in Knightdale schools, and I appreciate all of the time and effort he has devoted to understanding and improving the schools in our area," Killen says in the press release.

Why "in quotes"?

Excuse me Keung.  Another quick question.  WHY is "bi-partisan" in quotation marks in your headline?  I checked your N&O style book and apparently " " are used when a "frequent blogger" (and Lord knows that's you) is being sarcastic

OK; but that brings up another question - those candidates you N&O folks are supporting so passionately keep describing themselves as "non-partisan" (just before they launch into hissy fits how much they hate hate hate Republicans, Conservatives, etc).  I checked, and you never put "non-partisan" in quotes when you report that.

So, according to you - Ron using "bi-partisan" is sarcastic but his Repub-hating opponents claiming to be "non-partisan" are not ??  That's "interesting" (sarcasm intended!).

As my favorite "registered unaffiliated" N&O staffer, how do you explain that.?

Good lord.  It's a

Good lord.  It's a quotation.  Quotations go in quotation marks.  If you want to attack, at least have a leg to stand on.

Can you read? Click the press release and note how I'm directly quoting from the section about bi-partisan. Whenever I blog about press releases, I generally put in quotation marks in both the headline and the lead wording taken directly from the item. As for you woodstock, you ought to know better too.

I suspect the explanation

I suspect the explanation would run along the lines, "uh, hmm, er... well, ..."

Another name you'd expect

TK:  Add my name to that "names you'd expect" supporting Ron.  I was at the fundraiser recently with Paul, Tony, Joe, Keith, etc.  I looked for you but no luck .... didn't see Gerrick, Cash or Bob Geary either. ???

But not to worry, I made sure your name was mentioned.  Along with your fellow N&O "hit men" - Rob and Steve.  That discussion generated a lot of giggles and grins as you might expect.
