WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Ron Margiotta appears likely to be reelected as school board chairman

Bookmark and Share

It looks like Ron Margiotta will remain the chairman of the Wake County school board meeting after today's vote.

But will Margiotta run unopposed or face opposition from a member of the minority faction?

Margiotta would appear to be safe because he's got the backing of the other four majority members. Vice chairwoman Debra Goldman, who some minority members hoped might defect, said Monday the board needs to retain its current leadership.

The question facing the "Minority Four" is whether to back Margiotta in a public show of unanimity. The alternative is to run one of their own to force a symbolic 5-4 vote.

The rumor is that Keith Sutton would be the person to run against Margiotta and fall 5-4.

Margiotta's re-election would mean he'd stay on as chairman to June 2011. He'd be at the helm as the board moves ahead with implementing the community schools model.

UPDATE

Margiotta was reelected by a 5-4 vote. Debra Goldman was reelected vice chairwoman by a 5-4 vote,

Keith Sutton was nominated for both positions. To the annoyance of the minority faction, the majority had a roll call vote instead of a paper ballot vote. The paper ballots aren't secret. But paper ballots have traditionally been used.

After the vote, Margiotta praised the other board members while saying they're finally bringing family friendly policies to Wake. He said the th criticism they're getting comes "from people who remain in the past."

Throughout Margiotta's speech, the crowd would say no or boo anything that praised the majority.

HMMMMM

I guess Margiotta will spend his next term trying to get the animals back in their cages - He hasn't accomplished anything positive since becoming chair so maybe this will give a chance to make his four mascots happy - Wonder if he was in charge on his previous board up north with handling the animals !!!!!!  What a sorry excuse for a chairperson - He has no idea what our children need for their education here in Wake County.

Why don't you run for the

Why don't you run for the BoE so we see how well your ideas fare with the public. I'll even donate to your campaign ...the entertainment value would be worth it.

Hmm...

Crowd interrupting a meeting.  Sounds like they're still out of their cages.

I think they are still out

I think they are still out of their boxes Bob. The new Board has opened a Pandora's box and there is no going back.

It doesn't have to be this

It doesn't have to be this way.  When these people act so childishly in the board meetings, I think they only undermine their own credibility.  Personally, I thought the chair should have been firmer about not tolerating this kind of behavior all along, but maybe that was his plan -- to let the critics shoot themselves in the foot.
