WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Asst. Supt. Chuck Dulaney told the school board today his staff is recommending these changes to the reassignment plan:

* Change the year-round application school for nine traditional calendar base nodes assigned to Lincoln Heights and Holly Ridge from Holly Grove Elementary to Herbert Akins Road Elementary.
* Move Lacy Elementary students to Root Elementary in 2009 instead of 2010.
* Move the Panther Creek High students to Cary High in 2009 instead of 2010.
* Mode Node 658 from Green Hope High to Cary High in 2009 and not 2011.
* Move nodes 441.1, 441.2, 441.3, 441.4, 442.1, 442.2. 442.3 and 446 from Carnage Middle to Dillard Drive Middle in 2009 and not 2010.
* Don’t reassign nodes 580, 579 and 7 from Athens Drive High to Cary High.
* Don’t reassign nodes 161 and 231 from Forestville Road Elementary to Lockhart Elementary.
* Don’t change the traditional-calendar option for Barwell Road Elementary to Creech Road Elementary from Forestvile Road Elementary.
* Don’t move nodes 322.1 and 338.1 from Jeffreys Grove Elementary to Baileywick Road Elementary.
* Don’t reassign nodes 497.2 and 497.3 from Smith Elementary to Middle Creek Elementary. Don’t change the year-round application option for those nodes from Timber Drive Elementary.
* Don’t move node 448.1 from Middle Creek Elementary to Banks Elementary. Leave Swift Creek Elementary as the traditional-calendar option.
* Change the traditional-calendar option for Vance Elementary and West Lake Elementary to Vandora Springs Elementary from Smith Elementary in 2011.
* Don’t move node 743 from Garner High to Middle Creek High. Change the node's middle school assignment from North Garner Middle to East Garner Middle  instead of moving it to West Lake Middle.

Dulaney said the changes were made because of feedback from parents.

The board hasn't voted yet on those changes today.

Gotta have some drivel!

Chuck makes a few changes, says we listened and responded to parents because we care, Chuck's hens say "see, now you can vote for future bonds because we DID work with you" and blah, blah, blah.

Bottom line, 418 of you get another year to sweat what happens to you next and 24,000+ still get kicked in the groan!

I LOVE me some drivel!!!

Thanks for the update,

Angela, that sounds great.  Is a group being formed in the northern part of the county?

There is a very large

There is a very large organized group in the Northwest part of the county called One Campus One Calendar.  You can find them through their website www.1campus1calendar.com.  They began as a Leesville group but now have expanded to include multiple schools and have parents and teachers and other school staff members involved.  They are well connected in many circles.  Lisa B and AngelaW are involved and maybe others on this blog as well.  I have heard that this group is well over 1000 people strong.  Anything to add Lisa or Angela?

The tides may be turning in some areas, but so far nothing about North Raleigh/North Wake County. Hopefully that will be changed as well in today's working session.

Here's an interesting

Here's an interesting tidbit... while the school board goes merrily along today issuing their version of justice, they do so unaware that they have received a vote of no confidence from every mayor in Wake County.

Earlier this week, the Wake County Association of mayors had a meeting.  In this meeting, a resolution was introduced which proclaims WCPSS to be "broken," and the reassignment model to be dysfunctional.  The resolution also calls for reforming the makeup of the school board and how they are elected.  The motion to pass the resolution was introduced by Mayor Broadwell, seconded by Mayor Meeker, and unanimously approved.  It is currently being drafted for signatures.

Yes, you read that right:  Mayor Meeker, married to a school board member, seconded this motion.

Good luck to the school board and their deliberations, none of the mayors are behind you.

Where did you find this?

Where did you find this?

Mr. Hui, Any mention of

Mr. Hui,

Any mention of this by the school board during their meeting today?

It didn't come up during the

It didn't come up during the meeting. I just got off the phone with Holly Springs Mayor Dick Sears who said they're not going to include reassignment in the resolution, as much as he'd like to see it there. He said they're probably going to tailor the resolution to talk about changing the way school board members are elected without being specific about at-large elections.

Do the mayors feel any

Do the mayors feel any responsibility for causing all this chaos by their unplanned growth?  They issued building permit like drunkards.  They would not issue permits without adequate sewers but they will without adequate schools.  Than they show up at public meeting on the people’s side or pass resolutions to pass the blame.  That seems so sly.

Wow. Great informative

Wow. Great informative post!  Well, let's extend the pressure then. Let's get every municipality to pass a resolution that they want the WCPSS insnity to end as well.

The BOE may get what they want - less people moving to Wake County, but for muncipalities - yes, including Raleigh and Cary - will really start to suffer, when businesses don't want to relocate.  It does not take long for families to realize the school system they were "sold" by their realtor, or Chambers of Commerce, etc. is not the "school system" that is the reality.

So many people blindly believe their realtors that they will go to the school in or near their neighborhood and then move in and find out, oh no, the COUNTY is the "neighborhood."

Even those that do their homework and understand the complexities of the school system are still, sometimes, taken aback because here they place an offer on a house with a  traditional calendar school and then they go to closing and find out, oh by the way, your child started school three weeks ago.. it swithced to year round.

Maybe it's time that more town councils, chambers of commerce, business leaders start opening their mouths. ANd no, not the members of the Wake Ed partnership!

Interesting

This is interesting - can you post a link to the meeting minutes from the meeting?

Not so fast

I am leery about what Meeker considers "broken".

"Reforming the makeup of the school board and how they are elected" can mean many things. And not all of them are good.

I think they are beating us to the punch -- so to speak.

It’s the Lacy Parents and

It’s the Lacy Parents and Broughton parents that got Meeker to go against the BOE.

Re: Lacy and Broughton parents?

I'm curious as to how you got your information that Lacy and Broughton parents got Meeker to go against the BOE.  That's a pretty big accusation.  As for calling them Lazy....I think activists is a better word for them.  It seems to me that they are willing to stand up and fight.  Doesn't seem to me that that should be a problem?  And yes, I am a supporter of WCPSS....and the BOE.  Have you checked out other counties?  And have you walked a mile in the BOE's shoes?  That's a tough job for anyone to have!  Give them a chance....or move on.
