WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Recapping today's meeting

Bookmark and Share

Here's a quick recap of what happened. (I'll go into more detail tomorrow.)

Students protested the parking fee increase at the school board meeting.

Administrators went over the multi-year reassignment planning process.

Test results were shared with the board.

The board approved a new hunter education policy, the naming of Rolesville Middle School and taking $677,804 out of fund balance to keep teaching positions at year-round schools.

The board is now reviewing Supt. Del Burns' performance behind closed doors. An official announcement of the new terms is not expected until Sept. 2.

New topic: student parking fees

Call me a curmudgeon, but I feel zero sympathy about a student protest over parking fees. What's the parking fee for bikes?

Now then, Sept 2 for a decision? Is it really that hard to tell what a FAILURE this sinking tin can is?

Put the Dr on 90 days probation whereby he rescinds MYR, greatly reduces busing and returns all those darn ribbons and then we might reconsider extending his contract.

no no, that was "Mudge",

no no, that was "Mudge", remember?  hey what happened to "Mudge"? Cary Curmudgeon

I'm guessing also the BoE (eR) spent MORE time on the parking fees and the hunting policy (fast-tracked BTW) than on MYR.  The cancellation of that shooting event made national news, so they fast-tracked it, MYR is tanking in the school system, and that's a minor blip on the screen...go figure!

$700,000 is A LOT of MONEY

This Mandatory Year Round schedule isn't as easy as WCPSS tries to make it look. Chuck: check your calender(s) again.

I'd like some more detail on

I'd like some more detail on their justification on continuing MYR schools. What slush fund will money come from next year when the enrollment drops again and more teachers need to be funded? Oh, that's right WCPSS still thinks they are going to win and FORCE MYR down everyone's throats when the court ruling comes back in their favor. Sorry, forgot.

This meeting is usually replayed on Sunday evenings on Time Warner Cable channel 11. The Cary Cable channel.

Not far from the truth...

"WCPSS still thinks they are going to win and FORCE MYR down everyone's throats when the court ruling comes back in their favor."

Sadly, this could happen. If the Supreme Court does not pick up the WakeCARES lawsuit against WCPSS, parents in Wake County will no longer have choice in their child(ren)'s education. And you better believe they will put butts in those empty MYR seats as quick as possible.

and more scary is that the

and more scary is that the Supreme Court will not be inclined to side with WakeCARES seeing as it was unanimously against before.

So, who will run on a reversal of MYR platform?

Who do you see running in each district on a "reverse the MYR" platform? Let's find these candidates, arm them with the facts now, and gear up to unseat the unresponsive board members. When the majority of the board says "Enough, Delaney, put these kids where they want to be", it will happen. I don't see why we couldn't make 1/2 the magnet schools year round- people seem to be willing to do almost anything to get their kids into these programs. Surely that would be an attractive option, and it would have to seat 1/4 more than they do now! And why not let people opt in and out of year round, and adjust as neccessary? Couldn't each area have one YR and one Trad calendar school?

I just don't think this is nearly as difficult as they make it out to be. They need to give up on the 40% F/R target number and let people go back to embracing their community schools. Baucom's demise is a great example of this poor planning.

Why finding good candidates will be tough

1.BoE members need to work almost full time due to size of school district.

2. The pay hardly covers expenses and election costs; so they need other sources of income just to live.

3.Meeting times are not condusive to having a day job.

4. Since there is no staff, so that person has to be a well organized individual that can read and question.

IE. We need a relatively well off individual who does not have a liberal social agenda to promotes and not self-centered. A leader who is willing to question the WCPSS, not accept at face value what is told them. A person who is willing to listen to parents above the corporate power brokers.

Elective remedy the most effective

I agree. Elective remedy is the most effective. We have 4 open seats -- is it next year? Now's the time to start going. Surely there's 4 parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles, or any reasonable person who gives a flip about getting awards but love their kids and communities and want to move our system back to education.

The change we seek won't be easy, nor vapid and platitudinous. We do need more money; but it needs to be administered by a trustworthy Boe(eR). We need a board that isn't "carte blanche" to the whims of WCPSS. We need a board that hears and acts on parents' concerns. We need a board who'll fire Delaney and Del Burns and replacement them with educators, not social engineers. Let them write books on how unappreciative Wake Co. parents are of their "brave, progressive" thinking -- I don't give a flip. Lets get back to parenting and not fighting the insanity of the WCPSS.

start pounding the pavement that's quite a few districts!  I'll work on finding someone in 7, that's mine.

Any Real Progress Made Today?

Am I expecting too much to believe that they spoke about how much money is being wasted on operating under-capacity year round schools?  If they discussed any conversions back to traditional?  If they discussed any specific schools or specific areas of town? (specifically Leesville?)

Thanks Mr. Hui.

677,804 More Spent on MYR

That is a lot of money to spend to keep teachers at schools that don't need them.  Especially when the BOE has allowed traditional schools to become severely overcrowded. How bout tossing that much toward extra teachers for the traditional schools since we obviously have money to spare?
