WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system as it prepares to undergo historic changes. Will the new school board scrap the diversity policy in favor of neighborhood schools? Will year-round schools be converted back to a traditional calendar? How will the new board respond to  growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Recapping the joint meeting

Bookmark and Share

I'll go into more detail later, but here's a quick recap of today's joint meeting.

The working group of county, school, Rolesville, Raleigh and DOT staff have identified four alternative sites to Forest Ridge High. They are:

• A property near Ligon Mill and Taylors Ridge roads in Raleigh
• A parcel near Louisbury and Mitchell Mill roads in Raeigh
• A property suggested by Rolesville Mayor Frank Eagles on Lousbury Road near U.S. 401 in Rolesville.
* A property on Catlett Farm and Rolesville roads in Rolesville

They'll report back in a month with cost comparisons of the sites to Forest  Ridge High.

In the meantime, money is still being spent on Forest Ridge High despite the request of the new board majority. New board members John Tedesco, Debra Goldman and Chris Malone attended the joint meeting.

Both boards also discussed the enrollment projections and the capacity report.

Outgoing board members repeatedly touted how opening new schools on year-round and the conversions have given Wake the capacity it needs to deal with the lack of money for new school construction.
