WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Reassignment draft changes

Bookmark and Share

Here are the four changes to the draft reassignment plan that were announced by staff at Monday's CEM meeting at Cary High.

One change is to reassign areas along Harrison Avenue to Cary High instead of to Athens Drive High. Administrators acknowledged families, now attending Panther Creek High, who said they should go to Cary High because that’s where they had previously attended.

A second change is to drop the reassignment of 117 students to Cary High from attendance nodes 657.1 and 657.2. Administrators sided with families who argued they should stay at Green Hope High because they live so close to the school and don’t live near areas assigned to Cary High.

A third change is to drop the reassignment of 136 students to Cary High from nodes 381.1 and 381.7. Administrators sided with parents who said they should stay at Apex High because they’ll likely be impacted in a few years by the opening of a new area high school.

A fourth change is to consolidate the areas attending Yates Mill Elementary so they’d go on to Dillard Drive Middle and Athens Drive High. This would strengthen Athens Drive.

The first three changes were requested by a lot of parents. For instance, Preston residents are happy with being able to stay at Green Hope.

In cases where no nodes were listed it's because administrators said the plan is still in flux.

Just keep in mind that these changes could be revised again by staff. For instance, if the school board demagnetizes Broughton High then it will shake up a lot of other high school changes.

Even if the staff sticks with these chagnes in the revised plan, the board could add them back in when they work on the plan. Realistically though, getting dropped out of the draft is still a big win.

Stay tuned for the release of the revised plan on Dec. 16 to see whether Monday's changes stick.

Caveats

There were several caveats on the 3 year plan. IF the bonds went through. IF they get the schools they've been promised. IF the state rules against WakeCARES. The agreements were a bone thrown to a very large, irate Cary crowd to release some of the steam.

What I really liked though was how King Charles established the expanse of his fifedom and his ego by reminding relieved, applauding parents that "this is not a popularity contest, this is not a poll. There are only five opinions, five votes in this room that matter, and they are those of my staff."

Yes, sire.

still no news

What about grandfathering the rising juniors? They have a very big stake in staying where they are. Why can't this be answered now, instead of 4 months from now.

They don't open new high

They don't open new high schools with juniors and seniors. As for existing high schools, it doesn't look like yet that staff will recommend dropping the traditional grandfathering for rising juniors.

284 saved, who's next?

So, Chuck is giving in slightly so that it appears he really does listen to parents.

Hoooooie!

They will be FOREVER changing this so called "3 year plan" and even though 284 of you have won a small battle there are 1,000's and 1,000's more who will never get what they want. How about some give in for the Leesville folks Chuck? Does Patti not think that is a good idea? How about ending the ridiculous "we're going to set forth a 3 year plan so everyone knows where they stand" BC, because you and the rest of us know you will NEVER be able to honor it!

Chuck and Del, together their brains = ONE!!!

Maybe!!!

Looks like Delaney is trying

Looks like Delaney is trying to keep kids closer to their schools. He defiantly is walking the walk let’s see if the BOE backs him up.
What about the base kids for m2m3 who live near the school. Most of those parents do not have a computer and will not of had a chance to see or send comments about the fact they will be bussed 45 minutes into Cary( or was that Apex)
Mr. Hui
Outside of the online stuff have the schools or the newspapers tried to get full information out to parents who do not have computers? I know it’s not the N&Os responsibility but could they print a full page of the reassignment of nodes with assignments so those who do not have access to computers could get the info? Matter of fact I do not think I have received anything from the schools about the reassignments. How can you be bussing to help F&R and not get the info to them in a manner that they have access to?

also said

They also said that was the Staff's recommendation at that moment, not a promise nor a commitment and that the BOE had the final say so.
