WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Reassignment by the numbers

Bookmark and Share

Here's some numbers on the latest version of the reassignment plan.

The plan would move 24,654 students over the next three years, down from 25,486 students in the proposal released to the school board in December.

The breakdown works out to 9,547 students for this upcoming school year, 10,489 students in 2010-11 and 4,618 kids in 2011-12.

Administrators say that 45 percent of the students being moved, or 11,240 kids, are eligible to be grandfathered. But not all these students, especially low-income ones, will take advantage of that option because it will mean losing school transportation.

As you guys already know, the plan include kids who aren't yet here. It's something that's been done for years but has become more of an issue since the new plan covers three years.

Looking strictly at kids who are enrolled right now, administrators say that the plan would move 20,230 students. That means around 15 percent of kids now in the district face being moved over the next three years.

Opt-out

Mr. Hui,

Does that number include those who are having their traditional opt-outs changed?

If you're referring to

If you're referring to people who didn't give consent in the opt-out form, no. The traditional-calendar changes in the plan are for people who got in via the application process but would now need to go to a different school to stay out of a year-round school.

Let me be the first

no disrespect Mr. Hui,

A LESS THAN 1,000 student change!  BIG WHOOP SCHOOL BOARD OF DICTATORS!

Tell daddy dictator we're not impressed!  You pretended to listen, we told you why not to do it, you act like your less 1,000 students removed will please the bulk of us, and help you pass another bond in the future, nada nada and nada.

You are doomed and we're starting with Horace and Patti this fall.  Should the other 2 decide to get back in we'll add you to the list and make it a party.  A farewell party of the diversity dictators!

**Now, on to the snow, will tomorrow give track 4'rs a chance to join in on the Saturday make-up "fest" with 2 days notice?
