Progress NC Action is calling on Wake County school board candidate Heather Losurdo to concede the District 3 race to Kevin Hill.
In a press release tonight, the liberal advocacy group says Losurdo should be "avoiding a costly and divisive runoff election." This is coming from the same group that created a website dubbing Losurdo as the "Queen of Extreme" and trailed after her with a person wearing a skunk costume.
Here's the group's press release:
Progress NC Action Calls on Heather Losurdo to Concede
According to a Public Policy Polling survey released tonight, Wake School District 3 candidate Heather Losurdo would lose a runoff election to Kevin Hill by a 16-point margin, 52-36. With that news, Progress NC Action calls on Heather Losurdo to reconsider her decision and to concede, avoiding a costly and divisive runoff election.
"Progress NC Action calls on Heather Losurdo to concede the District 3 race. Wake County has seen enough divisiveness already. Now is the time to come together as a community and look out for the best interests of our children," said Gerrick Brenner, Executive Director of Progress NC Action.

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 14:05 — mrjeffThen again, Tedesco may as well make a lot of noise for the next 3 weeks. After that, it is two years of the mute button for that butthead, as the BOE actually focuses on accomplishing something positive for our kids. Politically speaking, he is clearly a dead man walking. Good riddance, and thanks so much for making this county a national joke. And good luck finding a job, because you will not do very well holding out a paper cup at Moore Square.
A Riot

The new board of misfits won't be accomplishing anything new, so don't kid yourself. It will simply be bringing back old policies, reversing recent ones and firing those who don't agree. It's business as usual for the wcpss and your kid's butt will be chaffed from all the bus rides forthcoming.

"will of the voters"
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 14:01 — mrjeffWe heard a lot of that nonsense when the majority took over in December 09 determined to completely change the course of the district, when in reality they only had the "will" of the very few people who voted in a portion of the county.
THIS TIME it really is the "will of the voters" but all of a sudden Tedesco et al. want to fight until they are out of breath. HYPOCRITES!
Just go home. With honor.
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 11:54 — mrjeffA runoff would make sense IF Mansfield had "diluted" the vote to negatively impact Losurdo. The reality is that Mansfield and Losurdo TOGETHER still got less votes than Kevin Hill. A 10% difference in an election with this small a number of total votes cast is virtually impossible to overcome. Another IF scenario for runoff would be low voter turnout... get out all your supporters that stayed home; the reality is that there was a HUGE turnout for this election, in an off-year, on a miserable rainy day. The last IF scenario? that the results in district 3 did not mesh with those in the rest of the county. Again, just not the case. Reality is that all of the other right-wing candidates got it handed to them. Even "the Godfather". Reality has already spoken, Heather. It said, "Hill back to BOE to retake the chairmanship." Save yourself and your family the embarrassment and bow out with your dignity intact. And if not for you or your family, show the children of WCPSS what it means to compete hard and lose gracefully.
Thinking like this worries
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 15:43 — zandeThinking like this worries me. Hill supporters cannot afford to be complacent. While the vote last night looked good, a runoff is a whole new election. Last nights vote totals do not matter next Nov. 8. The worst thing Hill supporters can do now is think it is a done deal. This will be all about turning out the base and getting out the vote. In this case WS is correct. Anything can happen in a runoff. This is not over. There is still work to be done.

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 12:08 — woodstockHuh? If Losurdo received the anti-Hill votes that went to Mansfield and Squires, she would have had to votes to win. A run-off is a a whole new ballgame, however, and anything can happen.
Um, No
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 15:54 — chaboardExactly the opposite in fact. If Hill had received only a mere *47* of the votes that Mansfield got he would've won outright. Even if 95% of her voters would've voted for Losurdo otherwise (which is absurdly low), the other 5% is the reason we are having a runoff.
Ridiculous
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 12:27 — mrjeffTo assume that she would garner EVERY SINGLE vote that went to the other three candidates is beyond preposterous. And she would truly need every single one... Simply removing Squires' (nice enough guy, so no offense to him) votes from the equation would give Hill his clear 50%. Keeping the Squires votes in play and splitting them even 3 to 1 for Losurdo would still give Hill the win. Math is math. And the math simply does not make ANY sense for a runoff to be held.
Get over it, Tea Partiers. IT is over for you in Wake, just like it will be over for you everywhere by the time 2013 arrives.

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 12:36 — woodstockAgreed. It is a GIGANTIC if... and I recognize the if game is futile and pointless. My point was folks obviously were not flocking to the polls to vote for Mansfield and Squires, many were anti-Hill votes, that's all. And, a case could be made that those same folks will still want to vote against Hill in a run-off.
Wasting Money
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 08:05 — bluedawgCould someone please explain Math to Mrs. Losurdo?
Mrs. Losurdo should practice what she preaches....demonstrate some fiscal responsibility and concede.
How is she wasting money?
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 08:33 — woodstockHow is she wasting money? The run-off occurs during an already scheduled election. Are you talking about the cost of the ink to put her name on some ballots that already have to be printed?
Um....
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 15:59 — chaboard.....could be wrong here but isn't most of this district in areas/municipalities with NO other races on the November ballot. How many precincts in that area are on the list below? There will be a lot of polling places staffed and opened for the one race only. A lot of ballots printed. Absentee ballots mailed. Etc.

not one penny
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 12:29 — mrjeffThe result is inevitable, so spending ANY Wake taxpayer money on this runoff is simply poor citizenship by Ms. Losurdo.
That's just silly.

Wish she would but....
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 00:10 — Jackson_TybeeI wish she would concede and truly do not understand why she would put her family thru further campaigning (that is sure to be negative) given all the evidence here -- she has 10 points to make up and that polling news is very bad for her. I am not sure, however, it's fair for groups to call on her to concede. Conceding should be the perogative of the candidate, and it would surely be a gracious move on Losurdo's part. Not holding my breath, though. Gracious is about the last word I'd use to describe Heather Losurdo. I am sure she's being convinced now by GOP behind-the-scenes operators to believe in some paranoid conspiracy against her and they're winding her up to pit bull status. She ought to to tell them to go away, say "no more" and buy some peace and quiet for herself and her family. The voters have spoken decisively. They did not choose her.
The entire balance of the
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 00:14 — jeffrey1The entire balance of the BOE is in the hands of District 3. It would be inconceivable for her to concede.
A month is an eternity in an election cycle. I've seen candidates gain or lose 20 points in a poll, practically overnight. Let's face it, this whole election has been a public relations battle. I expect both candidates to dig in, and come out swinging.
I totally agree

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 07:42 — gocanes2I guess he or she has a right to whine as long as he/she cast a vote. I guess it's fair game since there was a lot of whining the last 2 years when the Republicans were in the majority. Sadly, we will be back to worrying about our national ranking instead of individual student achievement and we will continue to hide low achieving kids among higher achieving kids to cover up the problem instead of fighting it head on.
