WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

President Obama: Vote in school board elections

Bookmark and Share

President Barack Obama wants you to to vote in today's Wake school board elections.

Organizing for America, the successor organization to Obama for America, sent out a message today urging people to come out to the polls. The group doesn't name specific candidates but you'd guess they'd prefer you vote for the candidates backed by the Wake County Democratic Party.

Here's the group's message:

Today, we all have a very important choice to make about our children's future in Wake County.

The election to choose our next county Board of Education is today -- and your vote could make a crucial difference.

Polls are open across the county until 7:30 p.m. To look up your polling location, just go to:

The Board of Education makes vital decisions about how to preserve and enhance the quality education we know our children deserve.

The Wake County school system is recognized as one of the top large systems in the United States. It's something for us to be proud of, but not something to take for granted. Your participation in today's election is a major contribution you can make toward ensuring our schools continue to thrive.

Thank you,

Lindsay

That would be very presumptuous. Obama favors a Community Schools platform which is counter to the status quo's position.

See my other comment. The U.S. Department of Education is not saying that the Obama Administration is backing community schools over busing for diversity. You've got to remember that most schools in America are alreayd neighborhood schools. Community schools would be a way to work with what exists as opposed to urging districts to begin widespread busing programs.

I was just pointing out that

I was just pointing out that Wake County's Democrat-endorsed school board candidates may not be the choice of the former Obama organization...if they had to make that choice.

Interesting how our system

Interesting how our system doesn't jibe with Obama's Community School movement. Its pretty much the opposite.

I've been meaning to blog

I've been meaning to blog about this for awhile but haven't gotten to it yet. The U.S. Education Department declined to comment when I asked if they thought that community schools was a better option than assignment by socio-economic diversity.

I voted for Obama in 08 & voted for Goldman D9 in 09!

Get out & vote today!
