Public Policy Polling says one of its polls shows that school board member Kevin Hill would defeat Heather Losurdo in a runoff.
In a press release tonight, PPP says they polled 519 people last week about a runoff and Hill had 52 percent to Losurdo's 36 percent. The poll has an error margin of plus or min 4.3 percentage points.
The group says supporters of Jennifer Mansfield and Eric Squires indicated they'd vote for Hill in a runoff.
“Heather Losurdo can call for a run off,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling, in the press release. “But our numbers indicate that she will likely lose by a wider margin than she did tonight. Her prospects for victory are extremely small.”
One thing to keep in mind is that Debnam actively worked to defeat Losurdo. He led N.C. Futures Action Fund, which funded mailers and a TV ad critical of Losurdo, calling her a Tea Party extremist.
The press release says "the campaign has taken a serious toll on Losurdo's image" but doesn't note how Debnam played a roll in that regard.
PPP acknowledges it has done work for Kevin Hill in this campaign, but says this particular survey was conducted independently.
"Democrats may not have completely finished off taking back the majority on the Wake County School Board tonight," according to PPP. "But our numbers indicate they should finish the job four weeks from now."

wondering about Mansfield supporters
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 08:17 — stepbystepI'm wondering what Mansfield supporters will do in the run-off? Several on this blog clearly recognize how unqualified Losurdo is to serve on the WCPSS school board, but I know they also dislike Kevin Hill. Or maybe they'd prefer not to vote at all?
So many fail to understand...
Tue, 10/11/2011 - 23:44 — rpm123This was a victory for civility and decorum, not for Democrats or Republicans. Two years ago a tiny electoral edge allowed a radical group to grab ahold of one of the best large school systems in the nation and turn it upside down. And they did that while bickering with their opponents and even among themselves - and causing a previous source of pride to become a national joke. Mr. Tedesco and company showed the voters of Wake County that they were not mature and professional enough to be entrusted with such a critical charge. Today the voters threw them out, plain and simple. And they did it with a large turnout in an off year election.
There is no doubt as to what the voters want: reasonable and intelligent adults making careful and judicious decisions about the most important taxpayer-funded activity in local government.
Mr. Tedesco, Mr. Margiotta and their allies can return now to New Jersey and other points north, where high property taxes allow cute little five school districts with scrubbed white faces and nasty politics. Meanwhile, the adults can get back to business.
And before you start your screaming... Mr. Tedesco and Mr. Margiotti were correct in one thing: Not all was well in WCPSS. There was a serious need to rethink how it would grow and assign students in the future. But that task required intelligent and thoughtful people, not immature, petulant beginners. Perhaps the radical board did the system a favor by so violently throwing out the old system. Now we can only go forward, just not in the direction of ruin and segregation.
I hope thoughts like yours
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 06:27 — tide_turnsI hope thoughts like yours aren't expressed at BOE meetings or in victory speeches. I can't see it contributing to either the civility or decorum needed within the BOE.
Well said, rpm
Wed, 10/12/2011 - 00:03 — Jackson_TybeeOne look at Margiatto with his scowling face and bullying atttiude and I am reminded of why I moved back down south after being in New Jersey. Send them packing!

Wait a minute, here... those numbers make no sense.
Tue, 10/11/2011 - 22:24 — Jackson_TybeeHill would have 52% and Losurdo 36? That's only 88% total -- what's with the rest of the 12%? I think those numbers need further explanation -- were these all people who said they would vote in the run-off for sure? Did those 12% say they'd stay home puking at the thought? Please explain!

Wed, 10/12/2011 - 05:45 — woodstockI'm right here. When Losurdo wins the plan will move forward. Or not... maybe the public really wants a BOE that partners with Rev. Barber and that seeks forced busing and continual reassignments to balance "diversity." If so, they may very well get it.

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 22:25 — jeffrey1SO it looks like you are going to pick up where Woodsy and the inspector left off. You really want to stoop to their level?

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 22:20 — Jackson_Tybee... just concede, Losurdo. Concede. (Can she even do that, BTW, i.e., not ask for a run-off?). We could use all the money that's going to be thrown at mailers and GOTV crap to improve our schools instead.

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 22:23 — jeffrey1Yes she can not ask for a run-off. But she already indicated she would ask. If you wanted to hold elective office, and were eligible for a runoff, what would you do?
And don't kid yourself. No one's gonna take campaign money and donate it to schools.

Never has been from what I can tell
Tue, 10/11/2011 - 22:37 — FSandYOULet's count how many did not vote today. Or the last election. Or the election before that.
Why would it ever be about the schools? Most simply don't care. Never did.
What would I do?

I would then file for divorce from that husband of hers.

Tue, 10/11/2011 - 22:36 — jeffrey1I guess I've always been an eternal optimist. I've been coaching baseball for many years, and even when I'm down by 5 runs in the last inning, I still believe I have a chance, and that's the same message I try to instill in the kids I coach.
I would ask for the runoff.

Wow, and you've lived here how long? People grow old and die in this county and during the entire course of their life nothing changes with the wcpss.
You HAVE TO BE one the last hold outs living in that delusion. Good for you.
Sure the Panthers on 1-4.
Tue, 10/11/2011 - 22:48 — jeffrey1Sure the Panthers on 1-4. But all 4 losses have been by 7 points or less, and Cam Newton showing great promise.

I'd rather live that delusion than be a quitter.
Keep dreaming then Jeffrey
Tue, 10/11/2011 - 22:52 — FSandYOUYou can lose by 1 point, but as tonight proves, a loser is a loser and Wake County loves to flip flop the losers don't they.
As for the Panthers, keep up the good faith, they'll get to the playoffs alright. At home watching them on the couch.
