WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Rita Rakestraw
is getting some help for her campaign run for the District 1 school board seat.

Rakestraw is being assisted by Democratic political strategist Perry Woods. He's also working with Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker and several Democratic candidates for City Council.

Here's the press release from Woods, an occasional poster on the blog, about Rakestraw filing today:

Don't know any of the players mentioned nor am I taking a "side". It is not my district.

But it is impressive that the candidate and her supporters /endorsers have no problem laying their identities, support, and platforms on the line.

...

Well, we already have Meeker's wife making decisions for us on the School Board (Anne McLaurin) -- so why does it not surprise me that his political strategist is working for another seat.  Fresh voice? That's funny.

Are you saying that Perry

Are you saying Perry Woods and Rita Rakestraw are married?

I can't tell if you're

I can't tell if you're joking but they're not married to each other.

Maybe not on paper!

Thank you for answering

Thank you for answering Keung. It may have seemed like a funny question but I honestly didn't know. I knew a man in red turned up in Knightdale who was Rita's husband and I thought I saw someone described to me as Perry Woods - and I remembered him as wearing red. So this post made me honestly wonder. Funnier things have happened.
