WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Paying for Carolyn Morrison's school board reception

Bookmark and Share

A scaled-back reception was held for Carolyn Morrison after she was sworn into office today as the newest Wake County school board member.

Today's fare of punch, nuts and small pastries cost $184, according to Greg Thomas, a school district spokesman. That compares to $487.50 that was spent last month at Keith Sutton's reception, where hot hors d'oeuvres were served.

Among the guests at today's reception were State Superintendent June Atkinson, Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison, Wake County Commissioners Stan Norwalk and Harold Webb and former school board member Beverley Clark.

Maybe for Halloween

the BOE can dress up as Marie Antoinette.

(Yes, I know the "Let them eat cake" quote being attributed to her is disputed, but it is the concept that matters.)

Other BOEs in the nation have voluntarily reduced their compensation, including down to $0, in response to budget constraints and have never held receptions for themselves.

I agree

Way too much for the receptions when they wouldn't give the valedictorians a cake. Also agree the money could have bought more paper.

Hypocrisy

They couldn't host the celebration for the valedictorians because of budget issues isn't that right?
I also just dropped off a case of paper at my kids school. At $34 a case that $184 + $487 from the last reception would purchase about another 20 cases!
Let's vote these clowns out!

When the candidates we

When the candidates we support get elected, I will be happy to chip in my own money for their reception so that not one dime ends up on a dinner plate instead of in the classroom.

Me, too

How about asking for donations at the reception and then giving the extra money to the school system?

they still don't get it

I'll be writing Kevin Hill another note regarding their lack of leadership, and their gall to have a reception for an appointed board member when teachers don't have enough paper. Unreal.

... and Nero fiddles as Rome

... and Nero fiddles as Rome burns.

still too much

When teachers are reduced to asking parents to donate basic classroom supplies, that's still $184 too much. I hope this announcement is not met with congratulations for responsible spending.
